THE
A-Z OF THE RELATED WORLDS

by Helen Scott

The Related Worlds according to Charmed Life

“There are hundreds of other worlds. They are formed when there is a big event in History like a battle or an earthquake when the result can be two or more quite different things. Both those things happen but they cannot exist together so the worlds split into two worlds which start to go different after that.” “Numbers of worlds have been visited. Those which were best known had been divided into sets, called Series, according to events in History which were the same in them. It was very uncommon for people not to have at least one exact double in a world of the same series - usually people had a whole string of doubles, all along the set.”

The Related Worlds according to The Lives of Christopher Chant

“How many worlds do you think make up the Related Worlds?”

“Twelve,” said Christopher.

“Very good!” said Flavian. “Though, actually, there are more than that, because each world is really a set of worlds, which we call a Series. The only one which is just a single world is Eleven. All the worlds were probably one world to begin with - and then something happened back in prehistory which could have ended up in two contradictory ways. Let’s say a continent blew up. Or it didn’t blow up. The two things couldn’t both be true at once in the same world, so that world became two worlds, side by side but quite separate, one with that continent and one without. And so on, until there were twelve.”

“And did the Series happen the same way?”

“Yes indeed. Take Series Seven which is a mountain series. In prehistory, the earth’s crust must have buckled many more times than it did here. Or Series Five, where all the land became islands, none of them larger than France. Now these are the same right across the Series, but the course of history in each world is different. It’s history that makes the differences. The easiest example is our own Series, Twelve, where our world, which we call World A, is orientated on magic - which is normal for most worlds. But the next world, World B, split off in the Fourteenth Century and turned to science and machinery. The world beyond that, World C, split off in Roman times and became divided into large empires. And it went on like that up to nine. There are usually nine to a Series.”

“Why are they numbered back to front?” Christopher asked.

“Because we think One was the original world of the twelve,” Flavian said. “Anyway, it was the Great Mages of One who first discovered the other worlds, and they did the numbering. Now what do you think makes us call these twelve the Related Worlds?”

“They all speak the same languages.”

This is the title of a government post that can only be filled by a nine-lived enchanter. “That makes him strong enough to control the practice of witchcraft throughout this world and several others. The Government has given him that task. For this reason you will hear some people call him the Chrestomanci. The post bears that title.” (The Lives of Christopher Chant)
His job is to “make sure the world isn’t run entirely by witches. He has to make sure witches don’t get out into worlds where there isn’t so much magic and play havoc there.” He has a large magical staff of government employees to help him. If you say the name once, there is a good chance that he will “accidentally appear”. Say the name three times and he will be summoned at once from what ever he is doing, no matter how inconvenient to himself.
Chrestomanci’s that we know of:
Benjamin Allworthy (pre deWitt), Gabriel deWitt (The Lives of Christopher Chant), Christopher Chant and then Eric Chant. Christopher Chant was summoned to Theare while he was in bed with flu (The Sage of Theare).
It was Christopher Chant who rescued the children at Larwood House (Witch Week)

Chrestomanci Castle
The Castle is grey and turreted. There is a new part “with a spread of windows and a flag flying above.” As you approach up the gravel drive, you see a grand front door. If you go past this door you approach an obscure door hidden by a mass of rhododendron trees. The walls of the Castle are three feet thick and there are lots of staircases and corridors. The new part is carpeted and pictures hang on clean white walls. The old part has walls of whitewashed stone. Michael Saunders workshop is in the old part of the castle up a winding staircase. (Charmed Life)

He still has 8 lives left at the beginning of the book. (The Lives of Christopher Chant)

At last you come to a small bowl of meadowland surrounded by trees. There is an apple tree inside with a small spring bubbling up from nowhere at its roots and disappearing again. The tree overhangs an old ruined arch and the top stone of the arch has fallen down and sits at the foot of the apple tree.
