MESSAGE BOARD 8 from 30th March, 2003 |
From Gill King
Hi Diana I am a school librarian and I have just been looking through the 2003 Oxford catalogue "Books for Children & Young Adults". On page 38 you are pictured with a gorgeous little tortie and white kitten - have you still got her and how old is she now? I am cat mad having four of my own including one tortie and one tortie and white. Sorry this message has nothing to do with your books but I am ordering your new series "Dalemark Quartet". Gill
From Kitty

From Mariam Halai
Hi Diana. I hope are recovering well from your operation. I am 43 and just discovered your books 2 years ago, while doing a Harry Potter related search on Amazon. I find your books to be more satisfying than the Potter series though some are a bit too childish for me. Hexwood was great but i totally did not understand Fire and Hemlock. Whever you feel better please take teh time to explain what happened.
From Virginie
I really love your books, espiecially those in the Dalemark Quartet. I was wondering if you were going to write anything else about Mitt,Maewen and Moril. Please do!I really want to know what happens to them all afterwards. Continue writing good books!
From Connie Smith
Hello Diana You may remember me. I wrote you a letter a short while ago as part of a school project. Well I am writing to you to say that I was shocked when I heard that your health was so bad. I am writing you to give you my best wishes because I think you are a remarkable woman. Your failing health realy saddened me because I look up to you. Goodbye and God Bless Love Connie
From Allison
I was just reading the latest interview in which DWJ mentions that Americans do not like The Ogre Downstairs. I do hope that Canadians weren't being lumped in with that. It was the first one both my mother and I read and we adored it. It has remained one of my absolute favourites although Howl's Moving Castle keeps trying to edge it out. :)
From Casey
Hi. I just want to let you know that you have a fan here. I love your books and I would say that I really can't pick a favorite out of your books. I haven't read them all but one of my all time favorite books ever would be your Dark Lord of Derkholm. It's your first book I read and I loved it. It was so down to earth with great humor and an amazing plot idea. I couldn't put it down and have read it countless times since. I would really like to see another sequel as I enjoyed Year of the Griffen almost as much. I also love your Chrestomanci series and Dogbody. I think Witch Week is the best Chrestomanci because it shows a lot of originality. Just wanted to let you know what I thought. Thank you for reading this!
From Forrest Borod
Dear Diana, I am a very avid reader of your books. I don't have them all but I have most of them. I was wondering if you are coming outwith any more books concerning Chrestomanci or furure Chrestomanci's(like the many lives of Christopher Chant and Charmed Life). It would be really cool to read about Eric Aka. Cat as Chrestomanci. I love your style of writing and I hope to get the rest of your books to add to my collection. I am also looking forward to the movie of Howle's Moving Castle. Will you come out with a movie for Catle in the Air, too?. If so , Iit would also be really cool to see all your books come into full length movies, it sounds sooooooo exciting just to think about. sincerely, Forrest Borod

Dear Mrs Diana Wynne Jones, Thank you very much for actually replying to the letter I sent to you. I was really surprised since I never expected you to write back because some authors do not. But I am absolutely pleased and I wish you look in this new year. Thank you! PS I have already reserved a copy for the Merlin Conspiracy!
From Kate Dicey
Sorry to hear you needed the op, but hope things are going well and healing is fast and permanent!
From Diana Divine
Hello! My name is also Diana; I'm Diana Divine. I know a zillion people have probably said something like this, but I wanted to thank you. Your books have given me endless hours of enjoyment (my copy of Howl's Moving Castle is literally falling apart now... sob sob...) and more importantly, helped me with something crucial. You see, it's books like yours, books that appeal to children and teens and grownups, fantasy that doesn't take itself overly seriously, and with such multiple levels that it's possible to get something new out of the book on the hundredth reading, that have inspired me to want to become an author. As a matter of fact, when I first tried writing an original story, I had to scrap it because I had unconsciously made it into a near parallel of Deep Secret! Thank you for all the happiness you've given to my friends and I through your delightful books, and thank you for showing me an example of what truly great writing can be, that inspired me to write myself. You're the best author ever! ^___^ (Plus it helps that I like your first name a lot. Tee hee.) With lots of demi-worshipful love, Diana Divine ^_____^

Hi! First off I would like to say that I am addicted to all of your books, and have been since I first read Charmed Life about two years ago. I currently own the Chrestomanci books, the Dalemark Quartet, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, Fire and Hemlock, Hexwood, Deep Secret, The Dark Lord of Derkholm, Year of the Griffin, Dogsbody, The Homeward Bounders, and Dogsbody. I, most unfortunately, have become thoroughly obsessed with many of your characters: Howl, Tom, Mordion, Rupert, Chrestomanci, Mitt... the list goes on. I find that with almost every book of yours that I read there is some new crush that I take hold of (I never let go, either).
From Nikki
I wanted to tell you just how wonderful I think your books are. The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume 1 is my absolute favorite book. I just finished reading it for the third time. My firends all really like it too. I was wondering if you were ever going to write another sequel. I think it would be great if you continued either story from volume one. I liked volume two a lot but I fell in love with all the wonderful characters in volume one. Christopher grows up to be a really cool chrestomanci and Cat was another great character. At the same time I would like to hear more about Tacroy. They're all great. I hope you might consider continuing either of the story's. Thanks for writing such a super book.
From Magic Girl2
How often do you answer questions on this website and who will it mainly be about if you make another Moving Castle book? Does Sophie have connections that link you together? Are you the eldest of the three sisters you have? Is there any particular person that Howl is made from? I just love Howl!! I need to read the Chrestomanci books and get to know about more lovable characters! Which genre do you like to write best? Are you going to make another book for the Derkholm series? Who would it be about? For me I would prefer Kit and Derk because you haven't written about Kit as a main focus as much as Blade, Elda, Derk, and the people at the university. I personally enjoyed Derk's personality in the books becasue he is mild mannered and happy. In the way he always thought about his projects reminded me of Corkaran and his obsession about space. When you write the next Derkholm book will Shona be included?
From Adar Mcanna
Hi I love your books so much!!!!!!!!!!! I wanted to know if you were going to do anything else with Rupert and Maree. I love them both and I have a huge crush on Rob. I like Nick too though. I've always wanted to be a centaur ever since I was really little. My horse coat went from bay at 5 to palimino at 7 to black at 10 and now I want to be white. Also, can centaurs come as Asians? My friend and I were discussing it and she is Asian so.... Anyway I love all your books but DEEP SECRET is my absolute favorite.
From emily
I just wanted to say that your books are my absolute FAVORITES in the world, and I've read quite a few books in my (rather short) life. I especially love Fire and Hemlock. I can't say why exactly; I just do. I mainly love your stuff because a) the way you wrap the story around something else like that poem in Howl's Moving Castle or the Viking myth in Eight Days of Luke and b) because your books make me THINK! I am currently in the middle of Dogsbody and I have The Encyclopedia of Dog laid out on my bed, flipped to the picture of the Istrian Smooth-Coated Hound, which I think is what Sirius looks like. And I downloaded a copy of The Hound of the Baskervilles off the internet, because I thought that was where I had heard the term "wild hunt", until I remembered The Dark Lord of Derkholm. It's kind of my little challenge to figure out just what one of your books is wrapped around before I finish it because it's so much more rewarding like that. I'm not obsessed, I'm just enthusiastic. Sorry about your back by the way. Get better soon. And I want to know, WHAT IS THE POINT OF SUBJECTS AND PREDICATES AND KNOWING WHICH ARE VERBS AND WHICH ARE ADVERBS AND SO ON!?!? I asked my teacher because she was boring me to death but she just gave me some junk about "becoming a well-rounded person" and so on. Sigh. Anyway, please write back soon. Respectfully, emily (from Americaland)
From Jaclyn
Dear Diana- i just wanted to thank you for teaching me history. I'm sure you didn't intend for it to happen, but it did. In Witch Week you talk about Guy Fawks- i thought he was one of your creations!!! In america you must take AP-Europan to learn anything about him. The more books of yours I read the more I understand what in the word my teacher is talking about. Hope your back feels better!
From Sara Henriksson
Dear Diana, I have moved to England from Sweden and I have recently discovered your website. I have read all your books translated to swedish, and I was more than delighted to find out there are loads more in english! I edmire you enormously, I really do, and I am looking forward to reading all those books I have missed.
From Aimee
Hi I really love the chrestomanci series! I think Chrestomanci is perfect! I wanted to know if its not to much trouble, if Chrestomanci and Millie are actually in love or did they just marry because they knew each other so well and were both powerful? And also if they wanted to have children. My last 2 questions are when Chrestomanci is older does he still go to the anyweres? And also how is Tonino's mother related to Chrestomanci (In Magicians of Capronara)? Thank you Diana you are a great person, and writer!
From Aimee
Hi I just want to say how much I love the chrestomanci series! I would really like to know about Chrestomanci's teenage years and also the wedding day between Christopher and Millie. I know your book Howl's Moving Castle is coming out as a movie and I wish that the Chrestomanci series could to. Though it would be very hard finding an actor for the looks of Chrestomanci. Well bye for now. I think your amazing Diana!!!!!!!
FromClare
Dear Diana: I've read the two Chronicles of Chrestomanci books, the Dalemark series, the Dark Lord of Derkholm/Year of the Griffin duet (duet? I suppose it would be. I think) AND I LOVE THEM ALL! They're so great! And Christopher C. is sooo awesome! (I feel like Estelle. *giggle*) I'm pressed for time, writing this, so email me! Thanks!
From Anne
Hi! Obviously, since I am writing here, I really enjoy your books, of which I must have read at least 20 or so, and think you are an amazing author. I was just reading some of the other things people have written here and it was heartening to see how many others (though I am sure they are not all) have such good taste. Sally, the cat who owns me, would like to point out to you that griffins are extremely unrealistic creatures since they would never be able to groom their feline parts properly with a beack. I hope she knows you weren't actually the one to make them up. As everyone else has said, keep up the good work! (please)
From tori
hello! firstly you are my all time favourite author. secondly did you know that philip pullman thanks a tanaqui weaver in his acknowledgements for the amber spy glass? spooky coincidence? perhaps a fan? or does he have a connection with you? I keep wondering - sorry for any impertinence!!!!!! oh- and i feel that pullman must be indebted to you and ursula le guin for his dark materials plot. i hate the current trend of crediting him and others with being the first 'childrens' fantasy writers to write complex, dark and satisfying reads for young and old. my hope beyond hope is that tanaqui weaver is some kind of recognition for you.
From Alina
I was just looking at your news bulletin, and was copying down the dates of the times when you were doing book-signings, when I noticed I'd got the wrong year. Bother. So I decided I'd have to bother you and ask if you're having any book-signings this year? I would be ever-lastingly grateful if you did. And as I'm in England for only one year, this is my ONLY CHANCE to actually meet my favourite author. I am very sorry to have to cause you to get a sore hand signing a book. From a girl who is not a fan, as you would notice when you see I am not flat and keep people cool.
From John Spencer Tan
Hi Diana - Im 23, from Singapore, and I first read Howl' s Moving Castle when I was abt 12 (it was from my sister's book club) Moving Castle, Charmed Lives, Lives of Christopher Chant are my absolute favourites. I like many of the other books too. I think its the way you make the stories come alive and it fires my imagination. It also helps that I can learn more about the myths and legends of other cultures (eg, Eight Days of Luke) I know that the third sequel of CASTLE isn't quite forthcoming, but don't sweat over it okay? I am contenting myself with reading your books and short stories. Meanwhile: -Would there be any follow ups to "A Tale of Time City"? -Maybe Charles Morgan from Witch Week could be included as one Chrestomanci's charges - it would be interesting to see a "clash" between the young charges and Chrestomanci's kids.. Like maybe 'save the world' when Chrestomanci is away, etc? - Lastly, my most sincere wishes to you for a speedy recovery. p/s: your books beat rowling's hollow!
From Jessica Sundstrom
Dear Diana, O.k. I want to be an author when I grow older. I am already writing several book now and am hoping to publish one when I am sixteen. Many of my stories grow from my imagination. I don't have any control on when my imagination is going to spring up and begin a new story. They are always quite interesting but I talk out my stories. They usually happen at home but sometimes they happen in school and other public places. I'm not going to you for a remedy or anything, I really like how I do things but I was just wondering if you did this too when you were younger? Act out your stories and stuff? Anyways, I'd love it if you answered. 88, *Jessica Sundstrom*

I love your books. When a big fan of yours started me into your books i was really thankful they really are good books. I just wanted to ask you if you were going to make a sequel to the book "The year of Griffin."
From Henry Mason
Dear Diana Wynne Jones, I am a theatre director/author/actor working in Austria. I've been meaning for a long time to tell you how much pleasure your work has given me over, well, I suppose the last fifteen years or even longer; finally I've got round to it. I am a passionate reader and your books are among those I regularly return to and that I have derived tremendous joy and comfort from. So thank you very much indeed! My life and my shelves would be barer without that row of books. I write and direct plays for children, among other things, and am thus a great admirer of story-telling that, like yours, works on several levels and appeals to children and adults alike; and of stories of things that really matter, like freedom. Which, it seems to me, is what all your books are about, one way or another, and what makes them genuinely inspiring. My thanks, appreciation and respect yet again. All my best wishes, Henry Mason

Diana- I love your books! My favorite has to be Dogsbody, but I like all the ones I've read so far. I justfinished reading The Dark Lord of Derkholm and The Year of the Griffin, and I was wondering if you were going to write any more books in the series. Thanks.

Hello Diana, At the age of 15 I wrote to you, having been inspired by your books, and you replied, much to my surprise and delight. At the time I was trying to convince myself that wanting to be a writer was silly and I would be much better off working in a bank (or so my careers advisor told me). I listened very closely to my careers advisor, parents and the logical side of my brain. Unfortunately, I accidentally became a writer, actress and musician. Even more unfortunately, it's all going quite well so the banking world will have to do without me for the forseeable future. 13 years on I have found this website, and wanted to get in touch and let you know that reading your books and corresponding with you helped show me that doing what makes you happy is not only sane but good for you. Kindest regards, Hannah

I was just wondering if you ever thought of writing about Morgan Jenkins/Pendragon? Sophie is one of my favourite of your characters, and I would love to hear more about her or her kids. I would also like to say that I love all of your books that I've read, and I can't wait to read more.
From Roxana
Hello. ^_^ I hope you're doing well. I'm a student of 17 and I adore and appreciate your wonderful work. I strongly admire your talent and imagination, and I hope you continue to prosper in all aspects of life. My absolute favorite of your stories is HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, with my absolute favorite characters, Sophie and Howl. Although there have been countless requests from fans on your website regarding further writing on HOWL, please let me be another addition to those fans. I know the task of beginning and the process of writing a book can be very stressful and time-consuming, and you just have to wait for the right time and the best possible ideas. Even with all that, I hope you will seriously consider writing more of Sophie and Howl, and their unique relationship in the amazing world of the Moving Castle. I am very sure that your many readers will delight in it. I'm also aware that you've already attempted a few times, and I'm certain that you'll finally get it right! But by all means, this is only suggestion and ecouragement.
From Rebecca Day Rothfeld
Dear Diana, I really liked "howl's moving castle" and "Castle in the Air" I just read Howl's moving castle 6 times because i liked it so much, and i want to say that you are a really good author. However, could you write a sequal to the books? since howl and sophie are my favorite characters, I want to find out what happened to them. the second book didn't really explain this. It was really good though! As an idea, maybe something about howl and sophie getting into a fight? of course, your probably better at thinking of ideas then i am, and since those books are great and you thought of them you don't have to listen to me. Thanks again for writing such good books!
From Ches
Hi Diana, It's been a while since I last read your books. I have only read the ones in the Chrestomanci series, and I desperately want to know if you are going to write more?? Please do! When I first read the books I admit to being quite obsessed with them! My friends and I used to play games about them. So if you are, when? Also what happened to Gwendolin? After she went into the other world? Thanks, Ches
From John Gibbons
I'm reading your book The Dark Lord of Derkholm. I don't exactly get its time period. Also where would I get a list of your books? How did you get the idea? Why doesn't everyone rebel and overthrow Mr. Chesney? (I'm not finished yet) Could you please answer. Thanks.
From Christine Sun
Dear Ms. Jones... I am 12 years old, currently at the point where i find a book and sink into it devastatingly and cannot stop. This describes the affect your books have on me. I recommended several of your books to everyone i know. Same affect! All my friends adore your books, as i do, and i was wondering if CASTLE IN THE AIR will be turned into a movie too. Several movies I've seen, such as the HARRY POTTER movies, many BIG chunks of parts in the book are missing in the movie. Will HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE be cut short as well? i hope not! Every written detail and phrase, sentence and paragraph, is a terribly wonderful addition to the plot + story. Hopefully you will continue to write books of HOWL? Not that i don't like all your other books...it's just that i can't find a library/book store that contain all your amazingly captivating books. Am i chewing your ear off? Sorry...i could go one and on and on and on...but my averagely polite manners will prevent me from doing so. Thank you for your time and books in all ways possible! - Best wishes for your recovery of surgery... ~*~ Christine Sun ~*~ -PS. I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!!! -PS2. On the news bulletin, i noticed several people, very much like i, are currently at the stage of writing. I don't know if you've already given these on your website, for i have not been to every link yet, but...hints please? -PS3. Thanks again!
