MESSAGE BOARD 6 updated 30th November, 2002 |
From Kelsey Marcussen
I love to write storeis that's what I want to be when I get older a writer. I'm always writing stories and I never seem to be able to finish them because I get bored of them. For a while I had the habit of reading a story then doing one like it but I got out of that because I wanted to make up my own stoires my own ideas. I love this story I'm wroking on now and when I finish it I want to send it to a author to hear their opions on it. I can't wait for your next story to come out my favorite stories are the Chrestomanic and Howl's moving castle. I hope you keep writing and thanks for inspiring me to read nad write stories. By the way tips on writing wher great and they've helped me a lot thanks.
From Amanda Rose
Dear Ms. Jones, I just wanted to say thank you for writing all the stories that you have written. My sister and I can't get enough of them. We both fully intend to pass your stories down to our children and hope that they do the same. Unlike many others, I don't care about the subject matter of your books because they always turn out to be fantastic. I was just wondering one thing though....In Fine and Hemlock, exactly how much older is Tom Lynn compared to Polly? Keep up the wonderful writing and I'll keep reading.
From Sarah
hi im one of your biggest fans and my favourite book is howls moving castle and I would love to reed an on going book of howls moving castle. Will u write an other book on howls moving castle? I would love it if u did From Sarah Harrison P.S. a great writer and my favourite

Hi, I came across your site unintentionally when I was trying to look for your older books from online dealers. I first read your book in the 80s "Heart Quest serie" (Magician of Caprona) and fell totally in love you both yours and Tanith Lee's writing (the only two authors I would read...I don't get a chance to read much) I was totally floored to read about your book is to be made into a Ghibli film. I'm a huge anime (japanese slang for animation) and manga (japanese for comicbook) fan. For the past 10 years, I'd felt your stories would make an awsome anime; now, with Miyazaki's studio involved, I'll be anticipating this one as much as I did with Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)! (...and I've not even read the story that this anime will be made from!) pl wong forever inlove with your work

Hi Diana! I was a little confused when I read Hexwood. Do you think you could clear up what happened? You don't have to answer that, because I should probably try reading it again first. My other question is, What was the first book that you wrote, and what was the first book that you published? Also, are there more books that take place in the same world as Derkholm besides the Dark Lord of Derkholm and Year of the Griffin? My very last question (I promise) is how many books have you wtitten? I'd love for you to reply, you are my all time favourite author and I can't believe that none of my friends have read your books or even heard of you!! I wonder how the world could have missed out on your wonderful books. From Hannah S, age 14 (almost 15!) in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. P.S. I just thought of one more question (sorry!!) what kind of dog was your old dog (I read you used to have one in one of your answers to someone else) and what was its name? I have a dog named Maggie and she is a Japapoo (japanese spaniel and poodle mix!) Thanks for taking the time to read this!!
From Hannah
Hello Diana! I just want to say that my all time favourite books are the Dark Lord of Derkholm and Deep Secret, but I also loved every other book you've ever read! In my opinion these two are your best. I just finished re-reading DDoD and I remembered why I loved it so much the first time! I even made my brother read it, but he says he likes Tolkien better. He says he couldn't understand why only the women were in on the plan to stop the tours. I'm afraid I couldn't give him an answer, but maybe you could. Thanks!!
From Colette
I love all your books especially Howl's moving Castle and the Dalemark books. Are you planning to write another Book on Howl if not PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEE consider it you could write something about Martha and Michael anyway i would be first in line to buy. Also my friends grandad Nicholas Lee says he knows your husband is this true? How you get well soon One of your greatest fans Colette

Dear Diana, I just finished reading "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume:1" and it was awesome. Most of the time, when I read books I always think, "Oh but he should have done this!" But I think that what Cat and Christopher did were compleatly normal. That's why I loved your book. That, and the concept of multiple worlds. Also, just the air of Magic around the whole thing. So many authors write about "magic". But very few can make it so believable that it becomes Magic. Do you know what I mean? I mean, there HAS to a Magic of some sort even if it isn't compleatly all witches and wizards. But if you go a little sideways from them(sort of like the sideways Magic in "Number Eleven")you leave the scientific sense, and come into the Magic, the pure Book-Fantasy for stories. Anyways, aside from all of this, I found your book the perfect doorway into another world to visit for a few hours. Kind-of like Christopher's Anywheres, hmm...? I can't wait to the 2nd volume, and my second Anywhere........... From, "S.K.iP."
From Rachel Postman
Dear Diana, You have been my favorite author ever since I found "Magicians of Caprona" while browsing through a Public Library when I was 9 years old. I read (and re-read) every book of yours I could find (and my mother always read them, too) though it seemed that, sadly, many were out of print or not available in the United States. I won't list my favorites, because there would be too many. I have still not read any of the Harry Potter Books--out of protest that your books have not gained their more-deserved acclaim (my lack of detailed knowledge of H.P. books, given the boycott, has not prevented me from getting the derivative and simplistic gist of them). You probably have no great desire for the fame and fortune that have befallen J.K. Rowling, but I still feel quite indignant on your behalf, ESPECIALLY having read one of the postings on this site that describes the stolen Dogsbody character! I love "Dogsbody," and I DESPISE plagiarism of that sort. However, I have recently been delighted to find that there is a whole community of your devoted fans, as well as many of your books available, on the web. I am so happy to be able to get my hands on more books of yours!!! My main point in all of this is to thank you for writing so many books--for writing at all. It wouldn't be overstating the case to say that your wonderful imagination, literary skill, and great sense of humour have, at times, made me feel that maybe there is magic in the world! With all my Best Wishes and hopes for your future health (and continued productivity!), Rachel Postman New York City USA
From Chrystal
Dear Diana, I love you books. You are favorite author. I just love fantasy. My favorite book is Charmed Life. I've also read The Lives of Christopher Chant, Whitch Week, The magicians of Coprona, The Ogre Downstairs, and your short story, What the Cat Told me. I've also read A Tale of Time City and have some question about it for you that I hope you will take the time to answer for me. First, what are temporons and chronons? Second, why did the patrol need to inspect Vivian in the first place? I understand that they said it was because she had so many chronons, but that brings me back to my previous question. My third question is what is Jonathon's eye function? What is its purpose? Why doesn't Sam have one? Well, that's all my questions. Thanks for you time. I hope this hasn't been an inconvienance and I hope to hear from you soon.
From Helen
Hello Diana, I am a 14 yr old from Auckland in New Zealand. I have just read your Chrestomanchi books for the third time, because I absoloutely love them! I am now using "The Lives of Christopher Chant" in my Trinity speech exam in 2 weeks time. Thank you so much for writing these books I also have to answer questions on the author and so am very glad that your very interesting life story is on the internet. You have the quality of writing that Harry Potter can't provide (according to my speech teacher) Thank You very Very much. Kind Regards Helen
From Madeline
Ever since I was 5 years old and sick with strep throat I have been reading and loving your books! My favorite is, I think, THE CROWN OF DALEMARK, because I can so easily slip into Maewen's place. Your voice when describing her thoughts is very true. (Besides, Mitt is just so adorable!) I have to say that the idea of Biffa marrying Mitt has always unnerved me, though. I simply can't imagine their personalities connecting quite right, although I suppose he would have had to, if he wanted to avoid marrying some absolutely vile daughter of an earl. I wanted to thank you for your generous view on fanfiction, too. I've begun writing my own Mitt-and-Maewen fanfic - admittedly with a good deal of smooshy feelings and fantasy fulfillment - and I can't tell you how much fun I have doing it (the URL is http://fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=709083, in case you would like to take a peek - I know that if people were writing fanfiction about my stories, I'd like to see what they were saying). So many other authors are uptight about it. Personally, I view it as a way to work on writing skill without having to deal with the introduction. It allows the young writer to simply focus on plotting and keeping consistent characterization, instead of having to establish the world and characters and so forth. Yours, Madeline
From Josh
Hi, my name is Josh. I really enjoyed reading your book "A tale of time city". I also noticed that the story does not continue. I really enjoyed the story and would just love to hear more about the characters in the book. So do you plan to write a scond book. Or should I just give up hope of seeing the second book.
From Rick
I read all the books of yours that I can find 12 times each. In Fire and Hemlock, Every book Tom gave Polly I read too. In every book of yours I read each book that was mentioned, except the Millie books. I loved each one.
From Alex
Hi, Im a 13 year old girl, and I recently read my first DWJ book and Im DEFINATELY going to read all your others. I really like the way you write, it really fits in to my imagination. Im from England but I live in Alabama, Ive found it very hard to fit in, but after school I like to sit in my room and read your books! I enjoyed Harry Potter, and I love your book! I write a couple of stories, with good ideas but I can never finish them! I want to thank you for writing your books, and Im looking forward to read all of your others to come!
From Lauren
Diana I am so impressed with Hexwood. I am an american and I first discovered your books in my middle school library. Unfortunately all the covers of the books (with a few exceptions) were extremely ugly.(no offense) I have a strange quirk I have problems picking out books if the covers are ugly. But one of your covers appealed to me and that was Fire and Hemlock. I read it and then I had to get past my quirk and read all of your books. I just got Hexwood out of the library and it has got to be the ugliest cover I have ever seen ( it is a very old cover cuz I'm not complaining about your new illustrator because he is magnificent) well anyway I had to force my self to get it only because it was yours and congrats because it is by far your most complex and best. I finished the last page and then immediatley turned back to page one and read it again. The plot twists just amazed me. All of your books always suprise me at the end I always end up going oh and then reading it again but this time I read it three consecutive times in ONE day!!!! Untill I found your books I was getting really bored so thand you!!!
From Julie V
Hi Diana, im a huge fan of the book Howl's Moving Castle. I read it a couple of years ago from my summer reading list at school, and loved it, but i was quickly assigned another book to read and forgot about it for a while. But rescently i found it in my closet and couldn't help but re-read it 2 more times, back-to-back (like you said, on the sight, u did as a child with a great book). so i must say, u have succeeded as an author. Im now part of that humungus line waiting for your mind to spark a new Howl plot. Im so happy to see that they're going to make an animated movie, but i think it would also be great if they made a real-people movie (for lack of a better name for a non-animated movie). Anyway, sorry to hear your back surgery is temporarily preventing you from answering questions and such, and i hope you get well soon! Good luck plot-sparking, u no we'll all wait as long as we have to to get more great writing! Thank you!
From ashley
Hello, i wanted to say thank you, as everyone else has, for writing such enthralling books. I also wanted to ask, like everyone else, if you are ever going to write more stories involving the Chrestomanci? They are my favorite. sorry to be repetitive. thanks
From Ben Dobyns
So I finished work today on getting my latest two films out to a series of film competitions and decided to reward myself with a nice, relaxing reread of Deep Secret. I was about 100 pages in when I had a miniature epiphany and realized just what an impact your books have had on my life. A little research later and here I am, visiting your website. Yes, this is one of THOSE letters. (By that, I refer to the "I'm such a fan of your work and it's been a major influence in my creative life for at least fifteen years" letter, rather than the "Hey, if I'm really nice you'll sell me the film rights to Charmed Life for a bargain-basement price" piece of grovelling fluff.) Anyway, whether my words will reach you or not, there are one or two sentiments that have brought me to this particular place and moment. To begin, it was your works that strongly influenced my (successful) bid for a concentration in children's lit for my English writing major. Going back to books that I read ten or fifteen years ago and discovering their many layers of meaning, not to mention the pure adventure and imagination present on every page, has truly been a joy. (Am I being too superlative? I suppose that we could go with only every other page and maintain some degree of decorum.) I still hold images in my head from my first encounter with Charmed Life, Witch Week, and Dogsbody. For those to remain strong and unchanged, rather than varying with my mood and/or "intellectual maturity," is a wonder. That one author could have such a breadth of imagination amazed me as a child and inspired me to reach for the same heights. Your works, along with those of Arthur Ransome, Tolkien, and Nesbit, (and more recently Terry Pratchett and Philip Pullman) helped teach me not to settle for just good enough, to know deep down that adventure and human connection wait around every corner, and that the life of the mind and the worlds in my head have an integrity and value all their own. It is because my imagination and creativity were nourished that I could see more of a life for myself than burger flipper or sales associate. Today I teach film courses at a high school for the performing arts, I have a growing independent film production company, and I write. This is not an accident. If I have strayed too far into the realm of unabashed adoration, I hope that you will forgive the excess and recognize the huge impact that your writing has had on my life. Certainly it is possible that I could have made it to this place in my life without ever discovering your writing, but I cannot ignore the degree to which it has enriched my experiences and perception. Thank you. (I'm going to end this letter before I become excessively redundant, or even worse, start name dropping.)
From Kayla
hi,ms.Jones!i just LOVE your chrestomanci books!i am one of your many #1 chrestomanci fans.I am sure a lot of people will want to know the answer to this question-will there be a movie?i hope so-i have read all of your chrestomanci books almost nonstop, and its just CRUSHING me that i cant get anymore chrestomanci!i cant stand it!i know you wont have a book for a while, but maybe a movie will tid me over.even so,it will be hard to survive.maybe in your volume 3 you could do more about cat, still a kid.i really want to find out about him,but not grown up(i like both volumes, but i enjoy kids better,i can relate to them)i think of myself, although im a girl, rather like cat.you know, like how he was thinking about fiddle while his life was in danger.anyway,if you do make a movie,im always available!!i neeeeed it because there are no other chrestomanci books which i love and now i have to read my friends book which sounds VERY boring, espesially right after reading Chresomanci:)i only read fantasy and sci-fi.
From Rhea
Dear, Diana, I loved reading your books "Dark Lord of Derkholm" and "Year of the Griffin". I was wondering (and hoping), are you writing another sequel to this series? If you are, when are you expecting it to be out?
From Bryn
Dear Diana, I love your books! I have read The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volumes I and II, a thousand times. You have really inspired my creativity. Usually, though I love reading, I'm not wild about fantasy, but your books changed everything! I am now reading A Tale of Time City. It's kind of confusing, but it's very good. The only thing I don't get is the Time ghosts and Once ghosts. Anyway, thank you so much for making a twelve-year-old girl very happy.
From Kelsey
Well, first of all I jsut want to say that your books are wonderful! second is not really for you but for your fans... i know it must get annoying to keep typing about the sequals to books... so i want to tell then that if they need more books to read they should try the Redwall series by Brian Jaques. I really love them. They were my favorite books until, of course, i read Howl's Moving Castle. *sigh* the third thing is that i was wondering if you might give some writing tips. I love writing stories but always find myself bored with it after a while.... that's all for now.... Keep up the grrrrreat work!!! and dont forget to Have fun writing! heehee...
From Gwen
Dear Diana, I was utterly shocked and horrified when I heard the news that Howl's Moving Castle is to be made into an animated movie. I don't understand how some people wish to see your books made into movies, because personally, I feel like once I read a book adn adore it, (as I have wiith all of yours) I have my own idea and don't want to see it spoiled by a movie's interpretation. I'm begging you to never ever ever make the Chrestomanci chronicles into movies, PLEEEASE! You are my absolute favorite author in the world and I can't help but have nightmares that you will sell all the rest of your charecters into slavery, like you said you did with Sophie and Howl. Also, people who need a movie version of the book to like the book need to get an imagination.
From Sarah
I love the story "The Magicians of Caprona" and towards the end they say the correct words to the song. And I was wondering what they meant in Latin. Thanks
From Katrina
Dear Ms. Jones, i've just started reading your books and i think they are some of the best books i've ever read in my entire life- especially the Chrestomanci series. From Lindsey
Hello, In your Chrestomanci chronicles volume 2, Simon after he was cursed with his Simon says spell, how could he say what Falkes said if the spell was undone? It doesn't make since. I love all your books and hope to see more. Is another Chrestomanci book coming and is Cat going to find another Chrestomanci? Thanks for making my imagination better than it already is.
From Heidi
K, I kinda didn't read the other messages, so I don't know if this has been asked before... I'm 12 (soon to be 13) and the only books of yours I've read is the Chronicles of Chrestomanci. I was wondering two things: 1) Who's the Chrestomanci in The Magicians of Caprona and Witch Week? You never give any hint of who they might be. 2) This sounds stupid, but is there ever going to be/ever been a female Chrestomanci?
From Nikki
Hi! I simply love Harry Potter. But then, yesterday, I went to the mall. Since I've already read all of the Harry Potter books, I decided to look for some more books that are fiction and has magic in it. Well, I was looking at the books when suddenly, I found what I was looking for....Your books! When I first began to read, I thought that it was just like Harry Potter. I'm still on my first book, and I just started. But I know I'll have lots of fun reading your books! Thanks a lot!!! Fondly, Nikki
From Laura
Dear Diana, I think your books are fab - my favourite being the Chrestomanci series. Though I realise there is littl echance you will do this, I really hope you'll consider writing a book that goes in the middle of "The lives of Christopher Chant" and "Charmed Life". I'd love to see how Millie and Christopher's relationship changes as they grow up and also how Christopher acts when he first becomes Chrestomanci after Gabriel de Witt retires. Happy writing!! :) :) :) :)
From Theresa and Kieran
Hi, I am 42 and my son is 9 3/4 and we both love all your books. My son got hooked on them after I bought him a story-tape of Chrestomanci. May I also recommend to other readers the tape of Howl's Moving Castle. The narrator is fantastic and really makes the story come alive. From Theresa and Kieran, North Curry, Somerset
From Earthangel
I'm sorry you can't answer questions anymore because I had really hoped that you could tell me how you came about the NAME Chrestomanci. Not the character.
From Sandra
Hi Diana, I recently got into your books sfter being recommended by my friend, and have started reading 'Fire and Hemlock'. However, I really don't understand how the story went, no matter how many times I read the story. Every chapter made it more and more confusing. Why has nobody tried to kill Laurel? Why didn't Polly marry Seb? What happened to Seb? Why did you make Nina become more apart from Polly? Why was Mr.Leroy following Polly? What made the 'Fire and Hemlock' picture, so wanted that Seb and Mr. Leroy had to threatened Polly? I have so many questions. After reading the book several times, I turned on my computer and got on the web and looked for a while for a website which actually gave me the chance to send you messages. Please reply.
From Taiyou no Hana
I hope you are well. It's too bad and too good that you don't have to read all the replies here! Maybe everybody praying for you will cure you soon so you could write more! I love you're books, especially the ones on Chrestomanci. I'm certain you've heard that sentence repeated for the longest time, but I'm sure you know every one of them is true and heart-felt. My parents think I'm too old for these books, but then again, no one is too old for a bit of magic to lighten one's day! Thank you very much for all you've done. You may never read this, as this will be another one of those unimportant fanmail addressed so adoringly to you, but maybe, just maybe...
From Jacqui
Hello Diana. I just want to say how mch I enjoy all of your books. My librarians think I am crazy as I am twenty years old and yet keep picking (what they call) childrens books off the shelves. I absolutely love Hexwood: trying to follow the plot through always sends me crazy. I've lost count of the amount of times I've read it now, but every yime I think I understand it a bit better than before. I think deep secret is great too, and Howl's moving castle. I'm really looking forward to the books that are coming out soon. Keep writing!
From Ashley and Jessica
Dear Mrs. Jones, Your books are our favorite books in the whole world along with Tolkien. We are twelve years old (twins) and live in California. Our library had a copy of Charmed Life on casette read by Tony Robinson but recently, someone has either lost it or considered it damaged and thrown it away, and we have been searching all over to find another copy because Tony Robinson is perfect for it. Our whole family just loves your books and would like to know if you know where we could possibly find a copy read by Tony. Please get back to us if at all possible. Thank You, Ashley and jessica

Hullo! I do hope you're getting well from your operation. I was just wondering if you've gotten to read any of the Everworld series books that I suggested in an earlier question. I hope your friend got a hold of them, I don't know if they're out in England. Now, I know you can't reply to these questions, so I just wanted to let you know I'm now on a quest to read all of your books, and to own as many as possible. So far, I'm doing quite well. I was also hoping if maybe you could happen to mention how to get a hold of a copy of the plays you've written. I just reread Fire and hemlock, even better the second time. Have you ever thought of using vampyres in any of your books? Can't wait to see how Howl and Sophie turn out in the movie. I guess I shall let you get on reading your messages, and thank you once again for giving me an escape from the grey life I live, and thank you for answering my question and for the writing advice. Your books have meant so much to me, and I hope your ideas start flowing once again. Much thanks and With much admiration, Candice. ps. I hope you do get to visit the states soon, I'd love to see you at a lecture or something (cough cough Ocean County, New Jersey is nice, and there's a theme park in Jackson Township, were I'm at. To Ms. Jones: I am reading The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Vol. I and I love it!! My mum bought it for me when we moved to the States and I never read it and forgot about it. Then about a few days ago I picked it up and started reading. I love it and want to know where you got your ideas. Where DID you get your ideas? P.S: I think J.K Rowling copied you...

From Matthew Nicholas
Hello Mrs.Jones, I love your books. I have just started, a friend recommmended them to me. The Chronicles of Chrestomanci books are absolutely amazing, Charmed Life is the most exciting, intruiging, and fantastic book it has ever been my pleasure to read. I'm not just exaggarating because this is your site, I wouldn't be on here if I wasn't absolutely obsessed with your writing. Anyhow, can you help me out with something? I like to write, but I can't seem to do two things. 1: Forshadowing- I seem to have trouble using this in my writing. What are some ways to forshadow the climax. Does it have something to do with using certain events to add up to it? I cannot tell you how overwhelming it is to have my teachers confront me with papers that are excellent, and then I find that they are quite bad because there isn't enough forshadowing or details. 2: Ending- How do you end a long book once you have givin a mysterious, happy, or sypathetic ending? It gives me trouble, and I often find myself spending too much time on an ending and having a disappointing ending for all the work. I would greatly appreciate some advice from an author as talented as yourself. I really love your books. Forever reading, Matthew Nicholas

just wanted to take a minute to comment on 'dogsbody'. i'l admit to never having heard of ms. jones' work before, and picked 'db' up because of the cover and the interesting premise. i had no idea of what lay between the covers of this book, and was totally shocked by it. it take long at all to completely lose myself in the story, as it was immediately obvious ms. jones is a practiced and accomplished author. the world she created within these pages was utterly fantastic, and the main situation, with sirius sometimes succumbing to mortal canine habits and thoughts, was at once both unique and enthralling. there's no small amount of philosophical underpinnings here, and i wish other books could be as thought-provoking as this. if i have a complaint, well if i had two complaints: 1) i wish i had found this book twenty years ago when i was a teenager. i wonder how many times i would have read it since then... 2) i have to find a first edition of this book, which appears to be almost prohibitively expensive. i wonder if i could find a copy somewhere and have the money go to ms. jones rather than some collector? thank you, diana, for dogsbody. i look forward to becoming lost in your other books.

Hi Diana! I just wanted to say thank you for writing. I am a final year university student majoring in English Literature and every once so often I get tired of reading what I read and I crave for a book that will keep me up into the wee hours of the morning and I turn to one of yours. I've been saving and painstakingly buying myself copies so I can have a full collection. My favourites are the Chrestomanci series, Dark Lord of Derkholm, Deep Secret and Homeward Bounders. Each and every one of your books makes me want to turn right back to the front and read it again to find more that I missed. Also i must say its BRILLIANT the way things arent what they seem but are so cleverly disguised. Your books teach me something new about thw world every time I read them. PLEASE PLEASE keep writing. I am trying to restrict myself so that i don't run out of titles to read.
From Simplyagoodbookfan
I love your book of Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume 1. I have read it about 5 times now. Is there going to be a movie about it?
From BookGirl
Are you going to write another Chronicles of Chrestomanci book?
From Cathy
Hi Diana I think your books are really great, I like the childrens books as much as the adult ones, especially eight days of luke, I had a similar idea with a parthenon of greek gods, i think they are great because they are so amoral. A good thing about your books is that they're accesible, it was them that first got me into fantasy and I even got my 'true stories are better because they're actually real' sister interested in some. I have looked at your writing tips and I am one of the people who writes random bits of stories, usually beginnings and, in the words of Julie Andrews, they're "a very good place to start". I also read that you like dragons I love dragons too there are just so many possibilities with them, I am not so fond of cats, but mainly because of allergies. Its good that your writing again, sorry about the flu hope you feel better. I'm glad that you said you didn't start writing until you were married with kids. I keep reading about people who publish books at 16, 13 or even 8, its making me feel rushed.I hope i get to meet you one day whenever i look at events lists for authors I'm always just too late. If you ever want to come to Worcester there's a beautiful cathedrale and many bookshops (not that I'm trying to pressure you) Yours with avid reading Cathy
From Sarah (USA)
I just want to say that howl's moving Castle will always be my favorite book ever! I first read it in the sixth grade when it "accidently fell" off the shelf at my schools library. I think it was a sign that this book was definately worth a read. Well, I am now 21 and it is still my fav. I read your bio and noticed that Lettie, Martha and Sophie were similar to you and your sisters (you being more like Sophie). Was that intentional? -Thanks, Sarah PS: I still have a silly crush on Howl...
From Catherine Preissig
Ms. Jones, I am a 28 year-old pediatrician in the US and have been a huge fan of yours for over 15 years. I habitually read all the Chrestomanci books once a year, for my sanity. I was wondering... 1. Do any of your other books besides Witch Week, Charmed Life, Mag of Caprona, Lives of Christopher Chant, and the 4 stories in Mixed Magics feature Chrestomanci? 2. A question I'm sure you've had hundreds of times- will there be other Chrestomanci books for us to look forward to? And lastly, have any of them ever been picked up for film or television? They should!! I see someone like Colin Firth or some other subtle genius as Chrestomanci. Anyway, thankyou so much for your excellent novels! I expect to be reading your book over and over my entire life, and can't wait to introduce my own children to them! Sincerely, Katy Preissig
From Chris Casanova
Hello I just finished Dark Lord of Derkholm and it is now one of my favorites. I hope you would consider writeing a sequel and continue the story some how. My and a few of my friends would greatly appreciate it. Thank you
From Laura
Your books are fantastic. Have you ever considered letting a production company make a couple of films based on your Worlds of Chrestomanci series? Or any of your other novels? The Ogre Downstairs would be excellent too. I think they'd make brilliant films. You are a very talented author. Have you ever wondered what your novels would look like on cinema screens?
From Eugenie, who lives in Australia with two sisters and many cats
You've probably been smothered in praise from all your adoring fans half to death by now, but would you mind if I smothered you some more? You're the loveliest writer I've ever encountered, and reading your books makes me happy and interested and entertained and warm inside. So I wanted to say thank you, for being creative and wonderful. I know you can't give any individual replies, so I'm going to hope that an answer finds its way into the bulletin, but I understand perfectly if you don't have the time: how much of a hand will you actually have in the Howl movie? I love Miyazaki's stuff - his films are absolutely gorgeous - but it just wouldn't be the same without your input. A large group of my friends have already amassed who plan to see it the moment it comes out, just for the Howly-romancy goodness, and we're hoping and hoping that it'll have the whimsical You touch. Don't feel bad about selling Sophie and Howl into slavery! You're not really, just introducing them to millions more people who might not otherwise grow to love them. And even if you're not all that involved, judging from his previous work I'm sure that Miyazaki will do a great job. But you probably know all that already, and I'm just babbling like a fangirl. It means a lot to me that you've even taken the time to read this. You've inspired me to write quirky delightful fantasy myself, so I'll be sure to thank you again when I (eventually) get published. However, that might be a while, so I'll do it now. Thank you! You really are wonderful.
From Eric
Dear Diana, I think your books are all really great. My favorite series are the Chrestomanci books. When are you going to write your next Chrestomanci book will come out? Will you please notify me if you are going to make another book please. (Sorry about the extra please, I always do it.)
From Eleanor Hingley
Did you base Howl in "Howl's Moving castle" or Chrestomanci in the "Worlds of Chrestomanci" series on real people?
From haydon judge

From Mhairi
From Mhairi I have to say that I just luurve your books. They so take top ten ever written (and probably the rest of the top 100-they're is so many!) My best is Howls moving Castle, Hexwood, Black Maria, The Ogre downstairs and The Homeward Bounders. I have yet to read others but am frantically searching up and down New Zealand before I move onto ordering over the net, but I'm sure they will be fab. Good luck for your next books and I hope you recover soon from being ill. :) One of your best fans! Mhairi P.S. Will the anime of HMC be coming to NZ? If it doesn't i'll... have to order it over the net for like $300US!!!
From Meg
I don't really think that using Japanese animation is the best way for Howl's Moving Castle to be displayed in the movie. I LOVED the book, but I absolutley HATE Japanese animation. I was wondering if Howl's Moving Castle might possibly made also into a live action movie or regular Disney animation. I would really hope so.
From Drew
How do you pronounce "Ynen" in the book "Drowned Ammet"? PLEASE ANSWER! Either put it on the message board or e-mail me if you can. I hope that you recover from your spinal operation soon!

Hiya!!! I just wanna say that I absolutely love Howl's Moving Castle and I was totally chuffed by the news of an animated film of it!!!! However I do live in the UK so it might not be shown here :o( But if that does happen I really hope that everyone really enjoys it and it lives up to the excellent book it will be based on!!! To Diana Wynne Jones I love your books so much! My favs are Howl's Moving Castle and Hexwood! I cant wait till your next book Will you write more about Howl and Sophie and Morgan? I would love to see a girls Chrestomanci and what happens to Cat. Maybe you could do one on Christopher Chant meets Wizard Howl! Thanks for reading this!
From Chau Ngoc Tran
Dear Diana, I'm sorry to hear about your surgery. Are you alright? I sincerely hope so. You are the wittiest, funniest and most engaging writer I have ever known. I LOVE your books! On a bad day they make me laugh. (I must also admit after reading the questions at your official site that I, too, am in love with Howl. You're right, it would be quite difficult to marry him, but definitely worth it. Sophie rocks, too. I'm waiting for the animae film!! I'm seventeen, by the way.)I would really love to hear from you, but since that isn't possible, a message will have to do. I have been looking for the tough guide to fantasyland but I cannot find it. I'll keep trying :). I heard about your new story-The Merlin Conspiracy- the suspense is absolutely unbearable! When will it be available in canada? Soon, I hope. I'd also like to mention that you are a great inspiration to me. I would love to be a writer someday, and the tips on your site are really quite good. Keep up the excellent work. (I tell all my friends about you - with a few hints that your books would make great b-day presents...which just happens to be coming up:). I'm sure you don't want to spend all day reading one message but I have so much to say I can't help myself. Sorry* I just want to congratulate you on the creation of Quentin. He is brilliant. Genius. I find him your most hilarious character yet, besides Howl. Do you ever recycle characters? I think I had better let you go now. Thank you for your time, Diana. I hope to meet you one day. It may sound cheesy, but you're my role model and I'm not ashamed to admit it to anyone. I'll probably be reading Howl's Moving Castle when I'm eighty! Once again, I love your writing, and Good Luck!
From Corey
Are you ever thinking about writing a sequel to Year of the Griffin? It was really good.Plus I want to know more about Flo and Angelo. I know you have already wrote a sequel to Dark Lord of Derkholm and usually there is only one sequel(to the first book) but please think about it. I love most of your books and I love Dark Lord of Derkholm and Year of the Griffin.

Dear Diana Like so many others, I bought your books for my daughters and then read them myself, and then I bought them for me and handed them on to my daughters. You speak in one of your articles about writing the book which stays with the reader and influences them thereafter - the book you finish and then start again immediately . . . for me it was The Power of Three. In sociological terms it is one of the most compelling resolutions of the idiocy of ethnic intolerance, but in literary terms, it was a book I wanted to read again and again and again . . . I'm so glad to have been introduced to this site by a fellow enthusiast - I've been suffering from intense irritation for ages that your immeasurably superior talents should look like flickering candlelight in the glare of J K Rowling's day, but I find that I am happily mistaken and the eclipse was a figment of hype. Thank you.
From Tracy J
Hi! I've read Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant and I have one observation that leaves me confused. In Charmed Life, the Chrestomanci is called "Michael" and in the other book, well, "Christopher." Why did Christopher Chant change his name? Thanks! Tracy J inspired to read the series by my daughter, Rob'yn (age 12)
From Derek Dohler
This would take some time and effort to maintain, but I might suggest that you give Chrestomanci an email address. I use Chrestomanci as my name on a number of internet message boards, and from time to time I get emails from people wanting to know if I am the real Chrestomanci. I have to disappoint them, of course, but I think a lot of young kids would have fun if they could 'email' Chrestomanci. Derek Dohler
From Emily R. Ritter
I don't know if you are still reading these things. That's okay I like talking to myself anyway. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well although the message board is a bit out of date so maybe you're okay by now. It must be hard to write when you are sick. I've read all of your books except some of the short stories and Wilkin's Tooth. Unlike most of your fans, however, I don't hoard my copies when I am done with them. I give them away instead and try to find another copy when I feel like rereading them. (This means that it's really great that they are finally reprinting most of your books.) Chrestomanci reminds me a bit of the Masterharper in Ann McCaffrey's Pern books. I'm not sure why. When I was younger I thought I was a writer, but I have this annoying habit of trying to send a Message when I would much rather just have fun with it. The best books to read are the ones that have opinions about life the universe and everything, but don't shove them down your throat. Now I just paint instead. (I give most of my paintings away to. This suggests a very un-American attitude about material possessions. Still, If you ever want a painting by an American you've never met, just ask.) This is the only fan letter (or email or message or whatever it is) that I have sent to anyone so I'm sorry if it is long and boring, but hey, at least I didn't beg you to write another Chrestomanci book. If you don't read it at all, that's cool. Thank you for being one of the best writers I've come across in my entire book obsessed life.
From Amanda Whatley
Hi Diana, I have loved reading YOUR books since last year (2001) when I finally tucked into Harry Potter books for the first time ( to try and relate to my pupils, initially) and my boyfriend John scoffed, and told me about `Diana Wynne Jones', who I had never heard of! So I now have book-indigestion from reading all your books far too fast with no gaps to think, and am SO Happy to have caught up on lost time. I am nearly 29. Your tact at replying to all the `You are way better than JKR' comments is admirable, but take it from me, I have got a real kick out of discovering all the little worlds and characters I had missed when I was young. My best one of all has to be Drowned Ammet, and I would love to see a film of it as vivid and wild as my mental pictures were while I read it, but I don't think any film-maker could achieve that. Maybe I should become a director! Thanks for all your groovy characters, and for entertaining me on my daily bus journey to school. I nearly miss my stop every day, due to being deep into the story, a good place to be. Cheers , Amanda Whatley
From Jake
In Whitch Week and Nine lives if Christopher chant (and a tad pit in Charmed life) I loved all the multiple worlds and how they happened from major events in history, but I'm not completely satisfied. I hoped that your A-Z of Related world would help but it realy didn't. Can we get more information about the otherworlds?
From Annelise F. B. Lowe
You look suspicously like my old pre-school teacher, Diana, but I know that can't be beacause I live in America, and you live in Bristol, England. Anyway, I am ten. I have read the Chrestomanci Quartet, and I loved them all! Also, I have read the first three books in the Dalemark Quartet, and Howl's Moving Castle. I love the way you always describe things. I mean, that in Drowned Ammet, you described how Hildy, Mitt and Ynen, after they drank the arris, went "Ump-waugh!" or something like that. Are you working on any books right now? Iam. This might bother you, plus you live a ways off from me, but everyone in my class says that i'm really good at writing, not to boast or anything, and I wanted some advice from a professional writer. I you can't, then that's fine. You are so good at writing! I can't describe how much I like the way you write. It's sort of, well, the only thing that comes to mind is little-kidish, no offense, and I know that isn't very well put, sorry.

Has what I've been hearing true? Howl's Moving Castle...animated? By..A Japanese Studio? Is it true? Is it going to be 'anime' styled..? Oh, I'm so excited! That my absolute favourite book...ever! You and Mr. Pullman are the best authours..ever! Please say it's true! That'd just be so shibby if it's going to be 'anime' styled as well..^_^
From Michelle
Diana I was a huge anime fan before I became a fan of your books. When I heard Hayao Miyazaki was going to do a film on you're novel I went out and tried to find your novel Howls Moving Castle because I had never heard of it and was curious as to what it was about. And as soon as I found and read it I've been looking for more and more of your books. It pulled me right in and I've re read it several times over already. I just love it :) And now I'm more excited than ever that Miyazaki is going to do a film on it. Both of my most favorite things in the world are coming together ( books and anime )and that makes me the happiest persin in the world. I can't wait for them to show it in japan so they can hurry and bring it over here to dub. I really hope they show it theaters like they have with Spirited Away. And I hope that everyone gives this movie a chance because I know for a fact that its going to be well done. Miyazaki is wonderful and I know everything will turn out fine in the end. I just can't wait for the movie!!! Thanks for reading my message and I hope I haven't bored anyone :)
From Alex
You have written a great deal of books and i was wondering is there any specific techique of writing a book that you have? Do you research ideas in books or do you just write your thoughts and make a few connections? And do you just pick up a pen and know how the plot will go and how the characters will interact with one another? And can you see each caracter in yur head? I'm sorry i know this is a lot to ask but I adore your books of course and was just wondering the thoughts behind the story.
From Blissie
Dear Diana, I really, really, REALLY love your books! I come from Singapore, and the local libraries don't seem to have as much of your books as I like, so I haven't exactly read that many. None of your books have disappointed me yet; the first one I ever read was Witch Week and I loved it! I've read Fire and Hemlock, though the story seemed rather vague to me, The Time of the Ghost, Hexwood (although some parts of it were really confusing, like about the Wood and the Bannus fields), A Tale of Time City and of course the Dalemark Quartet. The Crown of Dalemark is the most fabulous book I ever read. I finished it in about 8 hours and couldn't help readng it again. Hwever, I didn't find the ending that satisfying because there was so surety that Mitt and Maewen would be together as they should be after those long four years..... Mitt is my fav. Dalemark character ever; I loved him ever since Drowned Ammet!!! I was almost in tears by the end of the book. I'm infatuated with the Dalemark Quartet, honestly. It's just the exact kind of fantasy I like. But if it doesn't trouble you, could you explain a little to me about Hexwood? I still don't understand the part about the fields, and why the castle was there. I've read it over tons of times, but I never fully understood... it was a great story though.
From Jean Wee
Hi Diana, I'm a 30 year old from Singapore, who started reading Witch Week when I was 8 and have been laughed at for still reading children's books at the ripe old age of 30 instead of Fortune 500... I have collected almost everything you have written, so I can re-read them over and over again, and still manage to laugh anew each time. I love your writing - it's hilarious! My favourites are Dark Lord of Derkholm and Fire and Hemlock, though it was the Chrestomanci series that got me stuck on your brand of insane humour.... Fire and Hemlock touches such a romantic vein in me, that after my best friend lost my copy, I hunted world-wide on Amazon.com to replace my copy! I'm so glad that Miyazawa is going to do Howl's Moving Castle! I will definitely buy a copy of the animation.... He is a wonderful animator. I've always wished I could be a children's writer, but since my imagination seems to have stalled after kindergarten, I'm glad I can live vicariously through yours! Keep writing!
From Lain Kaplan
Dear Diana Wynne Jones, My sister read aloud all of your wonderful books to me, and she and I really love them! I have to say, your exquisite writing style has captivated me more than most other authors' have, and I have been inspired by many of your lovely writings. Please, please write more of your awesome stories! I lately heard that Miyazaki Hayao's Studio Ghibli (my favorite animation studio) is making an animated movie of your hilarious book, 'Howel's Moving Castle'. How does it feel to have a movie made from a book you wrote? How much control (if any) do you have over what they do in their animated version? Have you seen any of the character designs (if there are any yet) of the characters, and if you didn't think they looked right, do you think they'd let you change anything? I have always wondered how authors respond to those things. As as inspiring author myself, you are one of my idols. I hope that you respond to this, though if you are busy, it doesn't matter... Thank you, -Lain

Diana- I wrote to you a few months back, but I can't help writing again after reading more of your books. I'm really surprised that more people don't write in about the Dalemark Quartet! THE CROWN OF DALEMARK is undoubtedly the best book ever written!!!! I can't see that anyone could write something better.Mitt is just SO ADORABLE!!!! I don't know how you come up with such great characters, either! They are all so believable, especially all the ones from the Dalemark books. I have only read these, Dark Lord of Derkholm, and the Chrestomanci series, and I want to read more of your books, but I can't stop rereading The Crown for the millionth time! The ending was more than I can handle. PLEASE WRITE A FIFTH BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reading is my hobby from day to day, unlike everyone else in my area. I don't know anyone who actually reads outside of school! I really wish people around here would learn to appreciate books like everybody on this site. Keep writing!I really hope you are better soon!

Hey Diana, just a quick question from a big fan over here in Arizona in the US, are you planning on ever making a sequal or even another book in the "Deep Secret" area? Just wondering, because it was one of my favorite books, and I would love to see more. Thanx, and again, I really love your books and educated writting style that is sometimes lost in fantasy books now adays!

Are you making a 5th book in the Dalemark Quartet series?
From David Devilham
Dear Diana, A good freind recommended THE DARK LORD OF DERKHOLM to me and I loved it. I then read THE YEAR OF THE GRIFFIN and although it was not quite as upbeat as THE DARK LORD, It to was imaginative and well written. However, it seemed, at least to my mind, to call for a sequel. Therefore, my question is this; Do you plan to write a sequel to YEAR OF THE GRIFFIN? Sincerely, A future writer.
From Sarah Goodear
Diana, My name is Sarah Goodear and i am 12 years old. Lets cut to the chase I want to be an author. I have written many short stories and have attempted some very frustrating books. I have been reading many of your wonderful stories and find them so powerful and exciting that i literally cant put them down. I am an australian and live down under so i dont like my chances of actually getting to meet or even speak with you properly. I would really like to now where you get your knowledge from. I know it sounds like a stupid question and you may think this email is just from a kid who doesn't know how hard and time cosuming writing is. But please i am dying to know. In your book "The Time of the Ghost" you talk about seances and exorcism's and its so believeable as if you have actually written this story from being there as Sally, the ghost or one of the sisters. My point is have you recieved your knowledge on such issues from real life? Was you childhood a roller coaster ride full of adventure? Did you perfrom those rituals or did you research them on the internet? Thank you for your time. It is greatly appreciated. please email me back! Love From Sarah.

Hello, I wanted to say that I'm writing a story, that I got the idea for, from that scene in "Fire and Hemlock" when Mr. Lynn is spinning the nowhere vases for Polly. I'm not using the vases, or even the scene really, just the now-here/no-where thing. Do you mind? I'm sure I could veer the story away from that, but I thought I'd ask and see if I got a reply before I went trying to squeeze it out of the plot. I realize you're not really answering questions anymore, so I won't mind if you don't reply. Thank you for writing such wonderful stories! I've gotten both my roommates hooked on them. They keep coming into my room and asking for more of your books! Leah

You honour us, if you read these humble messages. I came to this site because I recently bought another of your books, and was finally inspired or rather, COMPELLED, to search you out and to find out who exactly Diana Wynne Jones was. So here I am. I read Charmed Life first. I don't remember when, where etc. but It remains the book I read when the rest of the world is falling upwards in a zigzagged spiral (you understand?). It should be made into a movie, I agree with you, that film-director person (Ben Dobyns- what a name!) a way up the September messages, and many of the other people here. Don't prejudge me; when I read it a few months ago, and it was nearing midnight, I got that "I'm going to explode" feeling. When I got to the end I whispered to myself "I need to write this into a movie!" Sorry. It didn't matter to me then at that place and time whether it was SOMEONE ELSE'S STORY or not. It was great. It needed doing. If it does eventually make itself into a film or something, I can compare mine with theirs (maybe yours???) and laugh at myself. I am not finished it, I am too busy getting distracted with my own stories. (I mention them only briefly- when I was in grade eight I was voted most likely to literally write the never ending story. This prediction may come true.) Well, thanks for everything, all of it. All these people thanking you! All these people loving what you do! Incredible! Why do I, personally, read and love your books? The last line of Charmed Life is my answer. Thanks a thousand times for being endlessly wonderful! Victoria
