MESSAGE BOARD 3

updated March 31st, 2002

From Angie. Brackley.

  • Hello Diana, I have enjoyed reading your books since I was about 12. I am still enjoying them now at 27. I wondered if you could answer some things for me that I wonder about when I should be doing other things (eg housework, going to work or looking where Im going). What happened to the dollshouse people that ran away in the orge downstairs? Does Howl go home to Wales for Christmas? Does he use his majic to influence the Welsh rugby teams games? thanks.

From Megan

  • Hi My Name is Megan and I just read the 2 volumes of Chrestomanci and I was wondering if we can go into the world of Chrestomanci.....or even talk to him? Cause I am curious how he looks like in person! I LOVE Chrestomanci and it's funny to see a boy fly around a room with a mirror! I couldn't help laughing! Oh by the way I have another question How come they never did use stainless steel?

From Elizabeth

  • hi Diana, my name is elizabeth and im 12 yrs old. i LOVE your books. my favourites are the Chrestomanci Series and Fire and Hemlockand The Crown of Dalemark. i really wish that you would write more books coz it was u who got me hooked onto books in the first place. all my regards 2 u n ur framily

From Justin

  • Mrs.Jones I think The Dark Lord of Derkholm is a very very good book. Plus I want to know how you get ideas for your books? Plus I hope you get better. Keep writing good books.

From Lindsey F.

  • Hello, I love your book "Dark lord of derkholm" I was wondering, if you could come to my school: Beadle Middle school (in the millard districk.) in Omaha, Ne. Not very many people have read your books at my school, but I want them toyou can tell them how good you books really are! I'm only a student, but i'm sure the teachers would be ok with it. my email is not in working so I'll put a messege up when its working.

From E.L. Manning

  • Dear Diana, I am in my thirties and have spent the past several months rediscovering your wonderful books. I first found them in libraries and devoured them as a teenager; what a delight to find them being reprinted and widely available! Having just finised A Tale of Time City, I have a question: will the sequel to this book ever be written? Both Jonathan and Sam are told they will face a trial before Chronologue at some later point in their life--Jonathan presumably quite soon, and Sam when he is older. Given that (1) Jonathan will probably be sent into history for at least some time as his punishment, (2) Vivian and Sam will find this unfair and try to bring Jonathan back, and (3)horrible things happen whenever Vivan ventures into history, do you think you will ever tell us what happens to these three intriguing characters?

From Cara

  • I think you should write another book about Mitt/Amil and Maewen. It would be cool I love your books the are soo intricate.

From Maggie

  • I recently read Charmed life and absoulutly FELL IN LOVE with it!!!! I checked out the rest of the Chrestomanci books from the library, and though they are all excellent, I really miss Cat and Julia and Roger and Janet and the rest of the crew! I fell in love with them and really hope I will see them again, though maybe only in my imagination. I am also really happy that you haven't merchindised your books... I love Harry Potter but HATE all the "acessories" that are being sold. It is wonderful to see a great author who hasn't sold her masterpiece.

From Name Victoria L.

  • Hi! First I would like to goive you a big Bravo, and a big Thanks, too. I read Charmed Life a long time ago, in 3rd grade, in French, and I more than loved it, and all my life I had been responding to the question "what's your favorite book?" the answer "ma soeur est une sorciere" (title in French: "my sister is a witch"). It was the first book I searched when I entered a new librairy, but I never found it again until I saw "the chronicles of Chrestomaci" in my new school, what a delight to remember some passages, to see again the picture I made up in my mind of a precise moment, and, more than anything (it might seem funny, I know) the really precise moment when Cat tells that to don't feel the taste of hot chocolate in his mouth, he first filled up his mouth with marmelade before he drink the chocolate, I can tel that it influenced me all my life, this little passge, funny, isn't it? But here are the questions: why do they have so strange titles from englih to french? it had annoyed me all mylife, making me unable to fimd the book again! (but you might have no idea;-) And how come Harry Potter had become so famous, even if your stories were as wonderful and interesting? do you think i is because in Harry Potter everybody is always more nice, but in The Chronicles of Chrestomanci there is "good" people changing to "bad", and the amercian cinema doesn't like this kind of thing? and finally: are you going to write more books? you really should, we always say good things about your books but not so oftn about you (even if your books are you) well for once: you are soooo talented! Again bravo and thanks! victoria l.!! p.s: know that we really love stories were we can find little details relate to other books (like when we find that Millie is in fact christopher's wife in Charmed Life). B&T!

From Angie

  • Dear Diana, I hope you feel better after your operation. Thank you for writing such wonderful reality twisted with fantasy books. I tried to send you a message before, but my computer made a strange noise and switched itself off, so I'm not sure if my message got though. I've read your books since I was a child, and they provided great material for daydreaming though tedious lessons at school. I used to imagine some of my teachers were really witchs or wizards, and I was almost convinced that at least one of them was time travelling in the stationery cupboard, as he always put his coat to go into the cupboard. Did you have any odd teachers when you were at school that you have based any of your characters on? Best wishes and a happy new year. Angie. Brackley, Northampton.

From Weston Zach

  • Just finished Howl's Moving Castle. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending was perfect. By the way I am a twenty-seven year old male. Weston Zach in Vale, OR, USA

From Shanleigh

  • Hello, I just wanted to get in contact with you because I've always wanted to be writer, but now I need to be one.
My family is going through a rough financial time, and we're probably going to have to move from our home that it took us four years to build. They raised our taxes and we can't afford to live here anymore. Nobody in our family wants to move, but unless we can make enough money to keep us here then we're not going to have any choice.
I love to write, and I always have. Your books are my favorite (The Dalemark Quartet are the best books I've ever read; I love them with a passion).
Anyway, the point is that I'm only 14 so there's not a lot I can do except write. I know you're not answering questions right now, so I'm really sorry if I wasted your time with my message. But, just in case you ever could answer, I was wondering... how could I get a book published, and can I get an agent at my age, to write?
    Thank you :-)

From Abbie

  • i'm in the middle of reading the Chronicles of Chrestomanci volume 1 and i absolutly love it. Your books are fabulous and i intend to read more of them. I want to be a writer too, and it's very inspiring to read such good books by other female authors. Keep on writing them, please. You've quickly become one of my favorite authors!

From Emilia

  • Hello, I live in America and I love your books but I can only get a few of them in the states. I wish I knew where I could get them because I love the ones I have. I have the Chronicals of Chrestomanci, and they are, undoubtedly, my favorite books. Thank you for writing these amazing books.

From Weaver of Dreams

  • hi Diana! I really love your stories. I bet you've had lots of readers saying that, but it's true! Is it true that Howl's Moving Castle is going to be made into a film!?! And this is the very important question I wanna ask. I have read both books on Blade and his griffin siblings, and i have to say i love them more than any other book you've written. ARE YOU WRITING ANOTHER BOOK ON THEM?! BECAUSE IF YOU ARE, DO IT QUICKLY! Heh heh - i wasn't being rude, I just love your stories too much! Pressurizing, eh? Oh yes - and where do you get your inspiration and ideas?

From Alissa Tinney

  • Dear Mrs. Jones, Hi, my name is Alissa Tinney and I am 12 years old and I have read "Howl's Moving Castle", and "Castle in the air." I just love those books so much that I finished them in two days. You are my favorite author. I know you probbaly won't read this, but incase you do I just want to say that I'm very sorry about your injury, and hope you continue your wonderful stories. Also, I was wondering if you have more books in your series of "Howls Moving Castle" besides "Castle in the air" if you do could you please e-mail them to me? I f you can't I understand. (I am not very good at following up in book series). And if you don't You have no idea at how much I would miss it. There is one thing I can promise you, is that I would be the first person to buy it. I'm sorry if I sound pushy, but I just fell in love with those books

From katheryn

  • hi my name is katheryn and i live in toronto, i picked up one of your books by accident and loved it, all i want to know is one thing will there be any more books in "The Worlds Of Chrestomanci" seriez.

From Debra Huffstutter

  • Dear Ms. Wynne-Jones, I have become fasinated with your books at the ripe "old" age of 44. They are wonderful & I shall save them for my grandchildren. I am now a collector of your books. You take my mind to places of total escape. Thank you!! I would love to have - I would be honored, if you would send me an autographed picture of yourself for me to hang in my little home library? Thank you so much in advance

From Deborah

  • My name is Deborah Gordon and I am eleven years old. I live in Australia. I really-really-really-really-REALLY love your books, especially Howls Moving Castle and Castle in the Air. I am really excited about it being made into a film. Are they going to make a film out of Castle in the Air, too? I hope so. I have got all the Chrestomanci books and I have Howl's Moving Castle and I'm ordering Castle in the Air through Dymock's book store. I think your books are better than the Harry Potter books, but those are still pretty good books.

From Deborah

  • This is the second time I've written today, but I jsut had to say thankyou to Pascalle for finding the words to Calcifer's silly saucepan song. I went to the site and I msut say that the song is pretty weird. I like th tune, though, but I thried singing the wonds with the music going and I jst can't seen to get it right! Many thanks again, Pascalle

From kelly hack

  • Dear Diana, I'm almost finished reading ''Howl's Moving Castle''.It's probably the best book I've read in a long time! For christmas i got 2 of your wonderful books.[howls moving castle and the chronicals of chrestomanci] my new year resolution this year is to read all of your books.my question to you is how do your books so great

From Crissy

  • I just finished reading the fourth book, The Crown of Dalemark, in the Dalemark Quartet Series. I could not put the book down. However, at the end you never left a clear ending as to what happened to the relationship between Maewen and Mitt. I would like to know if this is what you intended or if you plan to write another edition. The books where so interesting and fun to read and I was completly hooked to the story. Thanks for a great read!!!

From Jc

  • Mrs. Jones, I have read both the dark lord of derkholm and the year of the griffen. They are GREAT!, WONDERFUL, Simply the BEST EVER! I enjoyed them a great deal. I only have one question. Will there be any more Dark lord/ Griffen novel? Please continue writing them. They're GREAT!

From Daphne Lee

  • I'm happy to say I'm not your only Malaysian fan, but I'm proud to add that I have introduced many fellow Malaysians to your books. When Harry Potter first came out I read it and thought "Not as good as DWJ" and now whenever I give a DWJ book to someone I write inside "Better than Harry Potter!" DWJ books have recently become available in Malaysia and I guess we do have HP to thank for the current vogue in fantasy books. I'd love to meet other DWJ fans. If you're Malaysian and reading this, contact me Daphne

From Isabelle & Ellen

  • Hello, my friend and I are 14 year old girls and we are absolutely and completely in love with Howl! We are very excited about the movie and we were just wondering if perhaps, since you like Howl so much (hint hint) you might want to write another book about him. Also if he has any brothers who live in Ingary please let us know. Friends will do as well! But they must have the same sort of charming, witty personality! Thank you so much! -Isabelle and Ellen.

From Collin

  • Hello, I have currently just finished Year of the Griffin and I thought it to be exceptionally good. It was the first (hopefully not the last I have read from your collections) and a thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for providing great books for readers everywhere.

From Jonathan

  • Dear Diana, I am just trying to find when Archer's Goon will be reprinted? Also, I was wondering if there was a sequel to Archer's Goon. Thanks, Jonathan

From kat

  • dear diania you said in one of your responses to the question when is there going to ba an othe chrestomanci books? that if any of us had ideas to send them in well i was thinking and i got a few like this one: chrestomanci desides to ask a few other powerful magic children to come and live in the castel and one of them turns out to ba an other 9 lifed enchanter, only she is a girl. now cats future place as chrestomanci is at steak. in the end they both become chrestomanci together. you could change the ending if you like but its just an idea. well i hope that it helps i know its not the best idea but its a try. good luck and i hope that there will be an other book in the chrestomanci series. bi :)

From Nate C.

  • Diana, Your are my favorite authur! You exceed J.K. Rowling by far. Don't get me wrong, Harry Potter is ok, but it really isn't that good. My favorite books by you are: The dark lord of Derkholm, Dogsbody, (First one I ever read by you) The Chrestomanci series, The Ogre downstairs, Howls moving castle and the castle in the sky, and of course: Seeing is believing Good luck on the movie. (Hope they don't ruin it like they usually do. *Barfs thinking about how they mutilated The Black Cauldron.)

From Mark Nishino

  • Dear Ms. Wynne Jones, My name is Mark Nishino and I am in my last year at high school in Japan. I lived in the USA for 6 years and it was then that I first read "Dogsbody" and became a fan of yours. After that I read all of your books. This year at school for a project I translated "Dogsbody"into Japanese. Then I appreciated even more the depth of this book that I didn't appreciate when I was in elementary school. There are only a few of your books that are translated into Japanese here. One is "Howl and the Moving Castle" and I hear that it will be made into a movie here with the famous Japanese director Mr. Hayao Miyazawa. I am looking forward to that. The reason that I decided to translate "Dogsbody" is because I enjoyed it so much and I wanted my friends to enjoy it too as it is not in Japanese yet. I found it very difficult to translate and realized how much work you had put into it and learned so much about the stars and also the Grecian and Irish myths. That helped me to appreciate this book even more. Are there any plans to have "Dogsbody" translated into Japanese? I hope that I did it justice and that it will not be long before others here can enjoy it as much as I did. Sincerely, Mark Nishino

From Heather Anderson

  • I know you won't be able to reply, but at least I can express it. I've been wondering what Miss Smith named her new puppy at the end of Dogsbody? I thought Freya might fit, but am more interested in what you had thought, if anything. Best recovery to you, and thank you so much for all your wonderful books, and for letting us into the way your world works.

From Mark

  • Thank God all of your work is seeing publication again here in the U.S. I am assuming the Harry Potter phenomena is responsible for this, although I'd like to think it is the strength of and demand for your work. I recommend your books to anyone who is into children's (or adult) fantasy. Along with Phillip Pullman and Charles DeLint, they are some of the best I've read, especially in this era of Brooks/Jordan/Goodkind/etc. I suppose I should be glad that fantasy is alive and well because of the popularity of these authors, but it's a mixed blessing. Anyway, I am ecstatic about Miyazaki doing Howl's Moving Castle! What a combination - you and Hayao! His films are the best anime has to offer, and are very much like your stories in spirit. Character driven and moving. I'm going to look forward to that film as much as "The Two Towers!" I hope someday that someone will decide to film the Dalemark Quartet in it's entirety, either for the theater or television. It's one of my favorites and I love the amount of work that went into it. Thank you for years of great reading!

From Caitilin Lynch

  • Dear Diana, I really like your books and I admire you for your writing abilities. I am (alomost) an author and my friends and I are writing a book together that we hope to have published. I think it would be cool if you wrote more on the series with Howl's moving Castle. (P.S. Sorry, I don't have e-mail, it keeps like, erasing itself or something!)

From Siobhan Coombs

  • Dear Diana, I am 11 yrs old and am going into highschool this year. I have been reading your books for a long time and I simply adore them. However right now I am twice as thankful because these books give me comfort when I am nervous about the future. Thankyou a million times. From your loyal fan Siobhan Coombs

From Esther

  • I love the books you write;they all twist so delightfully that I just never seem to get them till they are written. Good job!! Keep it up!! P.S: I've just finished reading the Dalemark Quartet and I loved the series! But, I hope you can write another book about them, cos' I really want to know what happened to Maeven and Mitt!!

From Esther

  • Hi again! Sorry to bother but I just have to add that your books are the BEST!! Everytime a new book comes here (Malaysia)I instantly try to get it! (It finishes fast.) I really hope you can continue the Dalemark Quartet; I'ts hanging and I'm urm.... dying to know what happens to Mitt, Maeven and Moril.I sincerely also hope your health is OK.

From DD

  • Dear Diana, Having just read your 'Answers to Questions' thing on this site, I'd just like to know that, after reading both Power of Three and Charmed Life, I immediately started them again, and almost cried when the y were finished a second time. They've also pointed out to me how to proceed in life, and made me feel infinitely better about everything, particularly myself and the fact that people can be inexplicably nasty. I read those books when I was about 7, and I'm now 22 and still coming back to them periodically. Thanks. DD, Ireland

From Emily Lewis

  • hi my name is Emily i am 10 years old i have read so many of your books and i love them all. In my class we did a novel study i chose to read Charmed Life it was so great. I read part of it in my class they loved it too. I hope to meet you one day though i do highly doubt it. When i grow up i plan to be a writer even my teacher says i should. Your biggist fan Emily

From Eva Adderley

  • I just got Volume 1 of The Chronicles of Chrestomanci a little while ago. I really, really, really like it! So far my favorite character of all is Christopher ( but Cat comes pretty close.) My mom really likes the book too- she keeps snatching it whenever I put it down!

From Sally

  • Dear Diana, Hi! Well, I live in Australia and I have been thinking about what you the Chrestomanci books. I was wondering if you could write any about when Cat is Chrestomanci?? You see, Cat is my fav. character and I would love it if there were more books about him!!

From Bob Allen

  • I have just finished The chronicles of Chrestomanci and want to let you know I enjoyed them very much. Bob Allen of Anaheim Ca. USA

From Cathy T J Hill

  • Hi Diana you have been my favourite author for several years I started reading your books at 11 and now I'm 15. I really like your books and I love the way your ideas are so original. I hope you write more, especially Derkholm books I really like reading about that family and I would like to know more about them. I even had a dream with griffins in it. When I read Minor Arcana you said that you get inspiration from dreams, that is great because I always have the weirdest dreams (some of my friends think I'm slightly insane) but I see now that I can use dreams for inspiration. I'm also glad that your English it makes it a lot easier to buy your books, I think I have got most of them. I have wanted to write even before I read your books, but I didn't where to set my ideas but after reading your Chrestomanci books the answer was obvious, use another world, the Magicians of Caprona is my favourite. I also like Deep Secret your Bristolia idea was very good, I even thought of doing something like it for Worcester. I know you've got loads of letters from fans but I really wanted to contact you, I really think its great the way you keep writing and don't get wrapped up in fame and commercialism. Thank you for the inspiration and the entertaiment.

From L. Fisher

  • I would like to say a heartfelt 'thank you' for discovering you had a talent in the literary department, and providing me with hours of pleasure. A huge fan of your work since I was small, I have recently rediscovered my old favourites, as well as several new ones, and spend far too much time reading those when I should be concentrating on Dickens or Y Gododdin for my degree. (However, since reading one your lecture on the Middle Ages, I almost feel justified in doing so, especially as Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the texts I am studying!) I recommend your books to just about everybody I meet, and I have even managed to wean my younger cousin off the Harry Potter's - no mean feat, and onto your work instead! I just wanted to say thank you very much, especially as you have inspired me to want to write myself. In my humble opinion, you are one of the greatest writers this country has produced; up there with old Shakespeare and Chaucer (two of my other favourite authors!) Keep up the (fantastically) good work and allow me spend my loan on more worthwhile purchases in Waterstones. Thank you once again.

From Tamanna

  • Hello I'm Tamanna. I first read a book of yours - Charmed Life - back when I was a little child in Bangladesh, and it remains my favourite now at age 19, even after emigrating to England and discovering many other books of yours - Chrestomanci is such a fantastic creation! Every book you write is incredibly imaginative; I won't say you inspired me to write though, in fact you rather dispirited me because I never thought I would be as good (and never will be but I enjoy it anyway, except that my characters seem to take over my mind until I've finished the story!). Howl's Moving Castle is another personal favourite. How odd that nobody seems to be interested in a Chrestomanci film - I certainly am. I currently study medicine in Bristol, which is a beautiful city - the harbour, the Downs, the suspension bridge...no end of places to lose yourself in. It's fairly weird that I should admire your books so much in Bangladesh then come and settle in your adopted city, but it's nice to think that so many good books have been written in a place I love so much! I hope I never meet you, which may sound like an odd thing for a fan to say, but seeing as I shall (hopefully) be spending a lot of time working in hospitals - [they've let us second-years loose on Southmead at the moment when we know nothing! Don't worry, we're only allowed to talk to patients at this stage :)] - it's just a complicated way to say: stay well and take care! Also, to Meredith and Helen: you're doing a fantastic job. This is a great site because it shows how truly international Diana's fanbase is, plus I really like the font :)

From Maddy

  • I really enjoy reading your books and I would like to thank you for writting such amazing books. Most of your books, like Howls Moving Castle, are so adictive you can never put them down, even when you've finished them!(I know this from my own experiance!)Please can you write more about Howl and Sophie, as reading about them is usually very amusing. From maddy :O) P.S. I am sorry to hear about your opperation and I hope you get better soon. P.P.S. my mum and I think that if you do a film about Howls Moving Castle, you should have either Hugh Grant or Lawence Lewellen-Bowen as Howl!

From james

  • hi just thank you

From Jing-Yi

  • Hi everyone!!!!I'm 14 this year and i absolutely loove the Diana Wynne Jones books! To all the other fans of Diana, my friend and I read 'The Lives of Christopher Chant' and we had a debate about whether or not Christopher gets the life in the Temple Wall back!!!! If u guys can settle our arguement can you pls. write! Thanks!!!! Jing-Yi

From kira

  • Hello. I have just discovered your talent and your excellent and exciting books. After finishing a Masters Degree, I suddenly have time to read and am devouring your books on the subway on the way to work, and before bed, and every chance I get. I have read 10 in the last 5 weeks. You are an incredible writer. My question to you is, how did you become to prolific? How have you managed to write (and publish) so MANY stories???? Keep writing! I am on the 3 of the Dalemark quartet right now and imagine I shall start on the fourth in the next few days!! Take care, Kira McCarthy

From Phantom Enchantress

  • WOW. This is a first-time Chronicles of Chrestomanci reader writing this. I'm three-quarters of the way through THE MAGICIANS OF CAPRONA right now, and I must say I'm going to be bloody disappointed when I've finished WITCH WEEK. Not disappointed with the writing or the story, just disappointed with myself for not savoring every little detail. Back off, Harry Potter. You ain't got nothin' on Chrestomanci! By the way, I read the Tips for Writers article with great interest, because I'm currently writing a sequel to THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I think I've come up with an interesting array of characters: a beautiful, vivacious countess who dresses as a bat at dinner parties, her Goddess-esque (but created before I knew who the Living Asheth was) sister, the countess's arrogant fiance, an innocent young ballerina, and of course the woefully misunderstood, hideously disfigured Erik the Phantom. The only problem is: the darn thing lacks a title. Any ideas? Many thanks, Phantom Enchantress

From Tommy Tommitch

  • Hi i'm Tom from Bunbury a small city south of Perth in Australia i've read all of the Chrestimanci books + THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS, HOWLS MOVING CASTLE, CASTLE IN THE AIR, DOGSBODY & 8 DAYS OF LUKEand i've just started ACHERS GOON. I think that it would great if THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS was made into a film. My sister doesn't want to read your books because shes afrade they'll be better than haaaaaaarry potter i think haaaaaarry potter is no where near as good as your books. My Mum realy enjoyed HOWLS MOVING CASTLE aswell. I'm 12 yrs old so please keep writing your great books

From Mark Handley Andrus

  • Dear Mrs. Jones, Beginning with the Chrestomanci series, and including Dogsbody, and now the first volume of the Dalemark Quartet, I have been deeply impressed by your novels. I find they open up moral and spiritual development issues for people, of all ages. I am the bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama, in the United States, and find your books a great source of thoughtful material in pastoring people. Sincerely, Mark Andrus

From Tommy Tommitch

  • hi i am tom i am from Bunbury south of perth in Australia. I think it would be great if you made THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS into a movie. I would like to know if HOWL MOVING CASTLE will come out in Australia? If so when? I think your books are the best on the planet. I also think it would be great if there was a second book of THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS. I have all the chrestomanci book but i think that the magicians of caprona is the best one of them all. please keep writing like you are now. thanx Tommy Tommitch

From Rachel Theofanis, 13

  • Dear Diana, You are my favorite author. Your books are like passages to whole new worlds like the ones in your books. the Chronicles of Chrestomanci are the best and I read the 2 I have over and over again. These books are SO much better than Harry Potter. They take things like witchcraft and take it to a whole new more realistic level. Please let us know as soon as you can, I can't bare to wait any longer! And maybe someday you could visit my school. I go to Margeret Mead Jr, High, but I'm graduating this year, so I will be going to Conant High School next year. Keep on writing those great books!

From mia

  • Dear Diana, I am 11 years old. i was a harry potter fanatic until i read the chronicles of chrestomanci vol. 1 (now reading vol.2) just wounderin', does Cat from Charmed life show up in any other books as chrestomanci? i have been dying 2 know!! Please answer

From Alice from Perth, Australia

  • Dear Diana, thankyou. Whenever there is a storm or a cloudy afternoon I adore settling down into a deep chair to reread the many Chrestomanci novels. I relish reciting the adventures of Throgmorgan to my own cat, Millie, whose own devine beauty is reminiscent of Asheth's corporal entity, and have had occasion to explain to her that under our roof Fiddle-inspired antics are not for cats living on this Series. Deep Secret has encouraged me to be more alert to persons attending conventions and sermons, I have thus come across many interesting character studies, all of which have an element of magic in their constitution. My sister and I seize every DWJ novel that we come across, and on our holidays we indulge in listening to Charmed Life read beautifully by Tony Robinson.

From Ariadne

  • Dear Mrs. Jones, To start off, your books are one of the best pieces of liturature in the category of fantasy. Every time I begin reading your books, i am unable to stop. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, though! Anyway, I have been wondering if you'll ever come to America and visit your huge American fans and making some new fans, too.

From Charlotte

  • Hello Diana, I would be so glad if you wrote back! I am 14 and from germany! I've read quite a lot of your books and I liked all of them! (Now I started reading Fire and Hemlock for the third time.) But I liked best Witch Week!!!!!!! Because 2y reminds me of our class! Ours is not as bad as 2y but there are some people... for example, we have a Simon Silverson, A Brian Wenthworth (though he doesn't have so much trouble as the on in the story) a Dan Smith as well as a Theresa Mullet. And all those girls around Theresa- ohhhh, we have got more than enough of that kind! My friend Caroline reminds me of Estelle and me- I am a Nan Pilgrim, I like to write Storys too (and I am rather plump ;-)) In boring lessons I use to look at our class and imagine them in the book and giggle a little ;-) The people in your book are really realistic, though the books themselves are very imaginative. Where on earth do you get your splendid Ideas from? Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase anwer me! Your fan Charlotte

From Mia

  • Dear miss Jones, i LOVE your books, they are soo addictive as soon as i finished Chrestomanci vol.1 i went straight to the beginning and read it over. right now i am reading vol.2. will you PLEASE write more chrestomanci books, PLEASE?? I LOVE THEM! i have another question, will Cat show up as Chrestomanci in any other books???????????? i must know! And also, THANKYOU, THANKYOU for writing your books!

From Meggie from Texas

  • Hi, my name is Megan, and I'm from the US. I've read quite a few of your books, all the ones in the books stores, but not many of your books come out in America, I almost had a hissy fit when I found out your list of books is a lot longer than I thought because I'd have to buy them on the web to get them. I love your books. I've had this almost life long dream to travel to London just to get in the book stores, I know of five books that y'all have out that America doesn't!!! After I had finished reading the Crestomanci books I was hooked, I started with Howls Moving Castle and worked my way up. The Dalemark Quartet was quite different than the other books you had written that I had read (except for Dogsbody, I can't quite get into that one) but I thought they were wonderful, except for that whole end thing (in MY world books never end :o))

From Lillian

  • Diana,I want to ask you a question. The question is: Will you be writing any more books about Dalemark? Well, I know it sounds pretty unreasonable, but would you consider? I especially want to know what happens to Maewen and Mitt and all of them. yours sincerely, Lillian

From Richard Brough

  • Hello, I was wondering when you would be coming to a town near Birmingham, called Solihull, there's lots of great things to do there and there's a huge mall as well.(Have I convinced you to come yet?!) Because I was wondering if I could possibly have your autograph. I am 11 years old and I have already got 15 of your books. You are undoubtedly my favourite author of all time. I have tryed to get all my friends reading your books, and one of them is like me, he can't stop raeding them! I hope you keep writing. My life depends on it! My favourite of your books are Eight days of Luke and The Power of Three. I am currently starting Fire and Hemlock and The Time of The Ghost. I spend on average 3 hours a week looking for your books in the shops, but I can only find them in Waterstones and W H Smith, which is annoying! And after my 3 hours of looking for one of your books, I usually read it within that day(Iam a quick reader!). Although many people say that the best author is Joanne Rowling, I strongly disagree, I thing that no author could have a more imaginative mind as you, and I hope I keep reading your books until I die. As with most book - lovers, I keep my books for ever, and I'm sure your books in my bookcase will be battered within a few months, I read them so much! Well I thing you must be bored to death if your reading this, so I will end soon! All I can say is that your the one author who has had the power to encourage me to write books when I'm older, though I don't think I could be as good as you! I'm sure you are wondering why I bothered writing all this, well it's because I love writing! I'll probally write another letter soon, I have only just found this website, out of luck! What I would like to know is how you get all your ideas for your stories, as i'm sure most people have asked!? With lots of wishes for your new books, Richard Brough

  • dear ms jones, thank you, thank you, thank you! i absolutely LOVE your book, "Howl's Moving Castle" (it's the 1st bk by you that i've read and i'm really looking forward to reading more). i must confess that i've fallen in love with the great wizard howl himself. what a man... cheerio, lana

From Dlana

  • Dear Ms DWJ, I was strongly recommended by my literature lecturer to read 'Howl's Moving Castle'. I admit that I don't know anything about your amazing books prior to this recommendation. I'd just like to tell you that reading 'Howl's Moving Castle' was a most fantastic experience for me. Thank you so much for writing such a wonderful book. Knowing that an animated film of it is coming out soon makes me even more excited. I'm 23 now but I know it's still not too late for me to start my own Diana Wynne Jones collection. Thank you again and I look forward to reading your latest book. Cheers, Dlana

From Julia Cresswell, Oxford

  • Many thanks for one of the most enjoyable 'family evenings' ever, reading the 'Tough Guide' out loud. My 12-year-old son, a devoted fantasy gamer (The Homeward Bounders is standard birthday issue for all his friends) laughed so much that he fell of the sofa!

From Shannon Quinn

  • Diana, I'm 16 and i live in Michigan in the U.S. I started reading your books last year when i pulled the first Chrestomanci book off the library shelf for something new to read. Now i'm completely hooked on you writing! For the past year i've been constantly begging my parents to take me to the bookstore to see if they have any more of your books on they're shelves. I've read all of the Chrestomanci books, both of the Moving Castle books, the Dark Lord of Derkholm, and the year of the Griffin.. I have found all of these books highly enjoyable! My favorite though would have to be Howl's Moving Castle. When i first read it, i finished it in 2 days and had to read it again because i liked it so much! I couldn't believe it when i found out that there is going to be a movie made from it! I can't wait till it comes out. (I hope that you get an idea for another story using Howl and Sophie and maybe an older Morgan!) I'm personally in LOVE with Howl!! I think he is my favorite of your charachters, although Christopher Chant as Chrestomanci and Blade from The Year of the Griffin make a close 2nd and 3rd. I'm so glad that your books are back in stores and i think they are so much better than Harry Potter! I can't wait to pick up another one. =)

From Brittany

  • Untill i started reading you'r books i hated to read! no one could make me! you have become my favorite author! i am trying to get a collection of all your books but the only list i have to go by is the 1 inside the books i've read! could you please send me a list of them all so i might be able to get them? it would be a great suprise if you could!!! i think you should write another book that goes along with THE CHRONICLES OF CHRISTOMANCE or HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE and CASTLE IN THE AIR! i am only 13 years of age, but your books have inspired me to write! the first book i get published i'm sending you a coppy! since you inspired it!!! :) thank you so much for you'r books! they are way better than harry potter!!

From Erik Peterson-U.S.

  • Dear Diana Jones, I'm writing to you to see when or if you're going to write a third Chrestomanci book. I really enjoyed the first two books and am anxious to read another. I've read your replies to alot of the questions and this one is the same. Hope your back feels better! THANKS!!!!

From Amanda

  • I've been wondering for a long time whether it is possible to get hold of DWJ's first book 'Changeover' as I'd be really interested in reading it... Other than that I'd like to send a big get well soon message - look after yourself!

  • HI, I JUST FINISHED CROWN OF DALEMARK AND IT WAS AWSOME. ID SAY IT WAS BETER THAN ALL YOUR OTHERS. IV'E READ THEM ALL AND IM ONLY 12. YOURE A REALLY GOOD WRITER, THE BEST BESIDES SHAKESPEAR. I AM REALLY HOPING YOU WILL WRITE SOME MORE BOOKS WITH MITT, MAEVEN, AND MORIL AND THE OTHER CHARACTERS BECAUSE YOU ENDED IT LIKE THE OTHER BOOKS WITH SEQUALS TO THEM. SO I WAS EXTREMELY HOPEFUL THAT YOU WOULD BE WRITING ANOTHER IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IM DYING FOR ANOTHER DALEMARK BOOK OR SERIES WITH THE SAME CHARACTERS,PLEASE. Diana, please write a sequal to the dalemark book envolving maewen mitt and all the other characters. I loved the way these books entraped my heart and I hope you will read this PROBABLY YOUR BIGGEST FAN, ALEX WILSON

From Ariadne Camille L.

  • To start off, I don't want to sound like another pestering fan of yours, but your works are one of the greatest pieces I have ever read. It's different from all of the other books that I've read. In my opinion, your name should take place in the ring of great writers, right next to C.S. Lewis. Anyways, I'm not sure if anyone ever asked you this, but are all Chrestomanci's suppose to be men? Do you think the next Chrestomanci book that will "get" you have the Chrestomanci as a woman? I'm just curious...

From Tamanna

  • Hello Ms Jones, I began reading your books when I was a little girl back in Bangladesh and, after immigrating to the UK, never stopped (19 now!). Can I just say how fantastic it is that so many of your books were written in Bristol, where I currently study medicine; I love this city from Downs to harbourside, and it obviously inspires fine writing as well! Here's hoping I do NOT meet you in any hospitals (i.e. take care and stay well!), from Tamanna

  • Ok this will probably make everyone howl with derision, but the ending of 8 Days of Luke went straight over my head. Yes, I'm stupid, yes, mythologically illiterate - I did vaguely gather that these were the Norse gods who gave their names to the days of the week, a Nordic clue being given in Astrid's name; Chew=Tuesday, Woden=Wednesday, but who were all the gods really? I mean, what were they gods of, what were the myths associated with them (i.e. why were they given the characters they were)? Also, I always thought the Goddess Freya gave her name to Friday, but there were the 2 Frys in the book. Most importantly - WHO WAS LUKE? Cracking story, absolutely unputdownable, cheered when the nasty relations were bested & Luke was so attractive! - but I just wish everything had been explained like Sigurd and Brunhilda's story was - an idea might be to put in an afterword explaining all the mythology, with a little paragraph on each god, in future editions? Then people like me could say, "Oh so that's who they were meant to be, how foolish am I," etc. Looking up the facts in another book makes more like coursework and less like fun! Could anyone please help and give me a potted explanation/summary of all the myths? Of everything, from the gods, to the Seeing Ones, and the Tree. I'd be really grateful! Btw anyone heard the HOTTER THAN POTTER slogan for Diana's books, I don't know which publisher/bookshop is using it, but it's very cool - and true! From Nadia

From Athena

  • Straight to the point here - Are you going to write another book to go along with the Derkholm ones? I absolutely loved Year of the Gryffin and the Darklord of Derkholm, I read them both over and over... If you haven't been thinking about writing another of those, then please consider it? Pretty please, with a cherry on top? And ice cream for the side?

From Libby

  • Dear Diana First I'd like to say YOUR BOOKS RULE!!! I mean I've onli read Charmed Life and Warlock at the Wheel plus some others like Carruthers and The Fluffy Pink Toadstool, but then again I have been busy with Lord of the Rings (JRR Tolkien, 1974) and stuff. Second, would you be seriously ticked off if I wrote some stories and stuff using the Alternate Universes paradox? I don't know what the word "paradox" means but there you go. I'm writing some stories and things, I use the term "stories" loosely because they're pretty bad. One concerns dragon blood but not as a magical ingredient so I'm not copying it out of Charmed Life, don't worry. That should be long enough, if I think of anything else I'll leave another message. You'll get a lot from me. Sorry if I'm taking up valuable writing time, I've got to stop babbling. See ya!

From Sean

  • Dear Diana, I really simply adored your books, "The Dark Lord of Derkholm" and it's sequel "Year of the Griffin." I'm pretty sure these are the only two following this tract that you've written and I'd be forever greatful if you would consider writing a third story in this amazing series. I have a couple of ideas you could have if you wanted them for free, but if you really don't care then I won't be too dissapointed.

From Jill Conrotto

  • Oh my. I love your books. I was intruduced to you by another author, but you have overshadowed her in the most recent years. The first book I ever read was "Charmed Life" and I have been a fan ever since. This is not easy, being American . . . especially after I visited England (a stopover on a mission trip) and saw all those marvelous books in the bookstore by British authors. (e.g., Terry Pratchett, P.G. Wodehouse) I got "Homeward Bounders" and "Fire and Hemlock. The only books I have not read are "Power of Three" and "Wilkin's Tooth". I loved "Tale of Time City" and "Archer's Goon". I'd recommend you over J.K. Rowling any day. I have to go. It's past my bedtime

From Courtney

  • Mrs. Jones, I want to know something. Will Cat marry Carol Oneir???????????????????????????????????????????????????

From Kat

  • Hi, I feel intrusive adding to the people bombarding you with mail, but must unleash my adoration somehow. I love your books, especially how original they are. You write in a way that doesn't talk down to the reader, and even knows that we do "get it". I read on this site that a movie of "Howl's Moving Castle" was being made. Please, please, PLEASE exercise any authority you have over the production to make sure that they don't ruin or over-commercialize it. I think that if I start seeing "Howl" McDonalds toys, I may keel over dead. I have been in love with Christomanci for a long time, and hope to one day see more of him. However, I know it's practically impossible to write on command from trying to write my own fantasy. A quick Christomanci question; what happened with Millie? I figured that she was the Goddess from "The Lives of Christopher Chant" but in "Charmed Life" she seemed rather stuffy and grandmotherly. What happened to her whole adventurous spirit? Is it still there, but a little more hidden? And what about the two children? They were nice and all, but didn't seem to be children like Christomanci would have. Is there a story to them? Anyway, "The Tough Guide to Fantasyland" is one of my favorite books of all time, being so funny I was literally rolling on the floor. And so TRUE. It seems most fantasy writers (besides you) use the same four plots. A few other exceptions I found to that rule were Amelia Atwater Rhodes (excellent vampires), Tolkien (obviously) and Tamora Pierce (Good for mideval fans). But I just wanted to say to keep up the great work! Thanks for your time.

From Mita

  • i totally love your books, but i think that Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite. I liked it so much that the moment i heard of the sequel, Castle in the Air, i went straight to the library and got it. I read it within a day. i liked it as much as the first one, except for one thing: there wasn't enough of Sophie and Howl together. Maybe when you write the next book, you can include more of Sophie and Howl. Other than that, your books are terrific. thanx.

  • I've only recently become acquainted with Diana's, 'Charmed Life', and to say my young 6 year old son found it a delight would be an understatement. What a delightful book. More curious however, were the very vivid parallels with the Rowling books, a suspicion not lost on my son who also noted the numerous 'similarities'. Diana's books predate Rowlings, yet I've seen nothing on the web or in print, about what seems to me, to be startling similarities. Coincidence? Any thoughts?

From Magnus Lind

  • Sweet Diana in my family are we reading a lot together. We have stopped watching TV-we reads instead. I am impressed by your reading. You are much better than Rowling(potter writer). Looking forward to read more of you. Hope you are inspired to work a lot. We are waiting(smile)Love M.L

  • I just had to tell you how absoultely much I love your books. My favorite is HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, (I read it twice in one night, I loved it so much)and I'm also mad about the Chrestomanci novels. How do you do it?! I think you must have some magic yourself, because I seem to have fallen in love with all the characters in your books. (Even the sort of evil ones are lovely!) Thank you and please keep writing... I loved your other books, particularly Castle in the Air, but from the first scene in D.L.D, I fell in love with the rich characters and comedy. Thank you! P.S. I hope Castle in the Air turns into a movie, too!

From Ben (again)

  • Sorry to leave ANOTHER message, but I had so many things to say. First of all, I read you were going to make a sequel to Y.of the G, but the Idea hadn't come. I will be an author when I grow up and writing fantasy has been my hobby since I was three. I thought I could help with the Idea. For one thing, I want to hear more about what happened to Blade!!! Maybe the plot has something to do with Deucalion - you know, the traditional usurper deal. Or maybe he was kidnapped, and Blade winds up being the King of Dragons trying to rescue Deucalion and prevent a civil war at the same time. Ideas like this are always sneaking up behind me, and I could make up one in my sleep. Just some inspiration. I think it's wierd that everyone keeps associating Harry Potter with your books. Just because its popular, everyone's all 'are you rivals?' I think your books are very good, if not better. They are very underappreciated. No disrespect to Ms. Rowling, I love her books too. Also, have you read the Series of Unfortunate Events books? It's unfortunate if you haven't. LOL. On the Web LOL stands for laugh out loud, here's the real kicker... I read it in a book. Also try the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede, and the movies Dragonheart and Dragonheart II. The first touched me at the end when... Oops! I can't give anything away! Anyway, in the future look for books by Benjamin J.L. I cant say my last name - Internet rules. Happy writing!

I was intrigued by your Dalemark Quartet series, and would like to ask you a few questions about it. But since I can't do it here, I would like to ask you if I could get your address or another way of writing to you. Ever since I finished the fourth book I have had questions, but it seems like I can't do it here. Thank you!

  • I am an American who loves your books! Every time I come into the classroom at school my class groans because they see me with another Diana Wynne Jones book. It is an obsession that I am glad to have. What I love best is that when I finish one of your books I know that there are still like a million more for me too read. I have to order my books especially from the U.K. and my mom makes me spend forever converting british pounds to dollars. This message is pretty much just to say thank you for inspiring me to read and write and for putting all your books into the world.

  • Dear Diana, I just wanted to say thank you for all the pleasure you have given me over the years. I am 28 and have been reading your books since I was given Charmed Life for Christmas when Iwas 11. I don't have a favourite book because they're all great! My family have all read your books too. I gave my sister the Sophie and Howl books to read after her GCSE's to cheer her up and she loved them and wanted more. You say you would write another one if the right idea came along. You have probably already thought of this , but in case you haven't, how about sending them to China. They could follow Marco Polo's route and then you could use Chinese fairy tales e.g.The Willow Pattern. One question for when you are feeling better:- I usually like working out where people's names come from but I am stuck with Querida. The only place I have come across it is in Spanish meaning something along the lines of 'dear one'. Is this it? I think she's a great character. I love the way you create characters that are capable of doing great things, but at the same time are selfish or thoughtless in other ways. I hope you are feeling better Jennifer Annison

  • I first got one of your books a good few christmas' ago! I received two. They were BLACK MARIA and HOWLS MOVING CASTLE. I read the first page of HOWLS MOVING CASTLE but i forgot about it and didnt finish it. I later recovered the book and began to read it again. Although this time it seemed very different this time, it was this that made me incapable of putting the book down. I loved every minute of it! I have read both books many times along with the rest of the Chrestomanci series, The Ogre Downstairs and Castle In The Air. I enjoy them all because of the way you bring everything together at the end of each book and everything I didnt understand is made clear. Well I have to go so I can read STEALER OF SOULS which I bought today with my world book day token!!!!! You keep writing. And i'll keep reading.

  • Dear Diana,

I am a thirteen year old in Alaska and I positively adore your work. Sometimes, characters made by other authors end up bugging me SO MUCH that I end up rooting for the villians and being dissapointed when the good people win and the bad people die, but your characters have never done that to me.

It's not that I don't have my favorites out of your characters, though. One of your characters who I have never been able to get over is Tripos, the demon king from Dark Lord of Dirkholm. I can't place what exactly I like about him (it?) but I like him a whole lot. Is he based of anyone you know? :) I hope to see him again in the next book centered around Dirkholm, or at least another demon.

    Thanks for your time,

    Lindsey

  • Hello! Your books are so captivating. What I would like to know is if you are going to write about the restof Cat's life. He seems to be quite powerful. What will happen to him once he grows up. Will a evil Chrestomanci or evil nine lifed enchanter ever come along? Also, can i use your idea about a person having nine lives in my own story? Also, I have started writing my own books. If I gave you some of my own written work, could you tell me what is needed and how i can make it better. Also, i would like to know if my work is any good. My stories are all fantasy.
