MESSAGE BOARD 11

January–October 2004

From Lacey

  • Hi! Diana I love your books Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant. I love Harry Potter and now I love Gwendolen and Cat! Thanks!

From Amanda

  • I just finished reading the Dalemark Quartet and I absolutely loved it, but I want to know more about Maewen and Mitt and all the other characters who are so important to the story. I'm sorry to be asking this question, but What do you see happening to Maewen and all the others? For some reason I have never been able to read a series of book, or even a single book, without wondering if the author will ever write a sequel or a continuing story. I am told by my friends that I read toooooooo much. I probably do, but I love your books. Of the several I have read I like the Dalemark Quartet the most.

From Jeannette in the USA

  • How can I find out the sequences to the series? I ordered Castle in the Air to find it's the sequel to Howl's Moving Castle. Will try the U.S. publisher I love your books and would like to read each series in order. Sorry you're feeling bad.

From Cherie

  • Hi! I'm from Singapore and I've been reading your books since I was 11 (I'm 13 now). Just wanted to say how I loved your books! My favourite one is Howl's Moving Castle but I like the Chrestomanci series too! I recently read finish your Dalemark Quarter too... And, why is that your books have different titles? E.G. Aunt Maria is also titled as Black Maria.

From Jess

  • Dear Diana, I have just finished reading the Merlin Conspiracy, it was great, definitely one of my favourite books of yours! My mum and my sister also like your books. My mum kept taking the Merlin Conspiracy and trying to read it herself when I was reading it! She is looking forward to reading one of your adult books we saw in the book list. I am a would be author and I would just like to say it is books like your that inspire me to be a writer my self, i have wanted to write ever since i could read but every time i read one of your books i think, "I hope some day I'll write a book as good as that!" Thank you, Jess (and her mum)

From Sara

  • Hey Diana! How are you doing? Everythings great here. Here's a little speel about myself. I live in Anchorage, Alaska. All the way on the other side of the world from where you are. I am 15 years old going on 16 in March. Just this past month I have just read The Chronicles of Chrestomanci volume 1 and 2. I loved them!!! I just can't get over them! I love them so much. I was just wondering if you could give a list on all the books that have to do with Chrestomanci. I love him and don't want to stop reading about him. I would really love it if you could post a list of books dealing with Chrestomanci please. You are a wonderful writer! I love your worlds, people, magic, ideas on anything and everything, and just ya. I don't know what I love. How about this. . . I LOVE EVERYTHING!!!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK (if you plan on writing any more.) Anyways. I'm going to go now. Have a wonderful day! luv sara

From Daniel

  • My God... Diana you were definitely one of my favorite childhood authors. Given how long it has been since I have read one of your works... I certainly did not expect to hear that one of your works, Howl's Moving Castle, is being animated.. let alone by the japanese animation god Miyazaki.. that is definitely probably the most exciting news I've heard all year. His style definitely suits the fantastic worlds that you create and I hope he does another one of your works at a later date.. perhaps something from the christopher chant universe :) Anyways.. I hope that turns out amazing and this has definitely inspired me to reread your books including anything new that I have somehow missed. Cheers, and good luck with that.. I'm sure it'll turn out fantastic.

From Alice

  • Hey sup, i'm Alice. I've been writing now for, well a long time. And i've been told my stories are pretty good by some professional writers. Just out of curiosity, is there anyway of being published at 14/15...

From Katharina from Germany

  • Sorry to hear about your operation. I hope it heals well. I have got a suggestion for a spark for a new story. If visiting other countries doesnt help why not visiting the country inside of you? In every one of your books I found part of that country. What do you say? There is no way in without a spark? Not true. When you are lying (wich you might have to do more often now than you like) go behind the fireplace turn right an there it is. Plenty of it. All you need to do is choose. Thanks for your books. They got me writing too and it looks as if I am about to get my first novel published soon. Love, CAT

From Amy

  • hanks for writing such wonderful stories. I'm 30 and have been reading your books (and telling everyone about them) since I discovered them at 13. They have delighted and helped me tremendously. Finally found & bought a copy of _Aunt Maria_ yesterday (it's one of my favorites) and was delighted to discover that Mig loved & memorized Chesterton's "Lepanto" -- which I did too when I was about her age! (Why does no one know about Chesterton anymore?). Also finally bought & read Eight Days of Luke, which I loved. Have not read Merlin Conspiracy yet, but cannot wait -- I thought Deep Secret was fantastic. Thanks again

From Dominique

  • love your books they are so cool. There is so much fantsey in them. I think that you are my favorite author. I am doing an Author Biography about you. A whole poster all about you and your books. I hope you read this. Bye.

From FoxD

  • I Love Deep Secret!!!!!!! The characters in it are just great, and well I'll just save internet space and say I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!

From JD

  • re you gonna make a sequal to The Year Of The Griffen or what? The ending kinda left me hanging.

From Baillie

  • Hello. I have read many of your books since I was ten years old, including all of the the Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Howl's Moving Castle, and the Time of the Ghost. I find all the novels absolutely delightful and amazing, with imaginative interesting stories and wonderful characters. My sisters have read them all as well. They are addictive! Your style of writing is charming and takes the reader to worlds never thought possible. Thank you so much. (I've read the work of your brother, too!) Baillie, 16, Canada

From Heather

  • Dear DWJ, I LOVED Dark Lord of Derkholm and Year of the Griffin! You're my favorite autor of all time! I was so happy when you wrote on your website that you have sworn to write a sequal to Year of The Griffin. I was very shocked at the ending because of what Flury said.It would be cool if Elda liked him back. I'm sorry to hear about your spine. I hope you feel better soon, or I'll never be able to read the third book when you make it! But really, hope you feel better! Can't wait for the next griffin book in Derkholm! From your 13 year old fan, Heather

From Fernanda

  • Hello, Diana. I am thirteen years old and I love your books. I am from Brazil and have already written a book, but it is not published yet, but, if one day it be translated to English, please read it and tell me your opinion or send me and email telling me about your opinion about young writters and, maybe, my book.

From Natalie

  • I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my favorite ones are the chronicles of chrestomanci. everytime i go to a bookstore, i buy at least one of your books. i introduced them to one of my friends, and now she's crazy for them to. usually the impression i have when i finish one of your books is "that book was amazing. you are one of my 4 favorite authors, and i read so much that that is an extremely high recomendation. i want to write fantasy when im an adult, and you are one of the authors that drove me towards that decision. i just want to thank you for all the books you have written. i have not read all of them yet, but that is my aim. natalie ps-do you like garth nix, mercedes lackey, or tamora pierce? those are my other favorites.

From Sean

  • I read all of the Chrestomanci novels in about two weeks. They were all great. I think you should make a sequel to Charmed Life. I would like to know how Cat gets along being Chrestomanci and if Tonino becomes the head of Casa Montana or not. It also would be exciting to know what Gabriel de Witt was like when he was young and about the Chrestomanci who had to stop Neville Spiderman.

From Katie

  • Something rather interesting: I know you don't put yourself in your books. However, though she has a different personality, when I read Maree's point of view in Deep Secret, I hear your "voice". That is, the voice or tone I hear when I read the writing you write as you: that is, your articles, news, and autobiography (which, by the way, I read over and over). Maybe you and Maree have a similar sense of humor? I love your books; their creativity, their humor, their alive characters and unexpected plot twists that make so much sense in re-readings. You think, for example, "How could I have not noticed Yam is the Bannus?" or "...Maewen's horse is Kankredin?". I am constantly amazed, and one of my favorite activities in the whole world is, when I have the time, to read your books aloud to my 3 younger brothers. Thank you for the happy hours of suspense, laughter, and joy you have given all of us. It makes me so happy to see my brothers enjoy books, because they usually don't get the pleasure out of reading that I have. I wish you could see their faces when I read your books, and even better, when they start stealing the books to finish them theirselves, because I don't have the time to read every second of the day. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Please keep writing, and know that I enjoy absolutely every bit of news and writing you put on this site, and constantly check for updates. This is just the first time I got up the courage to write to you. I can't wait for a new book, and neither can my brothers. I have read all of your books, and as they are all so different, love them each for a different reason. I love the complexity of some of the longer ones- of course, I wish they would all go on forever, which is why I end up reading them over and over. By the way, the way you describe getting ideas reminds me very much of Terry Pratchett's imagery of ideas flying in from space or another universe and diving in to inhabit a head in a new place. (That's not exactly how he put it, but...) I hope you are healthy and happy!

From ?

  • Do hope you will write a follow-up to Wild Robert. It is excellent, but begs for a second book at least to find out how Heather wins the "treasure," Robert's heart.

From Jessica

  • I hope your operatian went well and i love your books i have 2 sets, the worlds of chrestomanci and the dalemark quartet i also have: The merlin comspisy Hexwood And others including ones which i read in the libery. I want to become a auther when i get older and you are my favourite auther thank you

From B. Bond

  • Dear Mrs. Jones, I wanted to take a moment of your time to express my admiration of your books and writing, particularly all of your novels that feature Chrestomanci. My copy of The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume I containing those Chrestomanci stories Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant has become rather dog earred over the years since I bought it, for those are two of my favorite Chrestomanci stories. I have recently reread the stories of Chrestomanci and the moment I put down the books, having turned the final page, I wanted to pick them right back up and begin again with the story. I would love to know everything about the world that you have created for them, and it always feels as if I start them once again that maybe I could discover just a little bit more than I did the time before. I adore the character of Christopher Chant, as both a young man, and as an adult. I would be curious to know more about the life of Christopher starting from his earlier days at Chrestomanci Castle, and how he came to marry Millie, and the character of Gabriel de Witt intrigues me as well. I believe that I admire these stories so much because they are a fresh approach to magic and fantasy writing, and do not seem to contain any of the usual fantasy cliches; a nine lived enchanter with a habit toward carelessness could hardly be called unoriginal. Thank you for sharing with us such wonderful and original works that encourage and inspire fans of the fantasy genre.

From Cara

  • Hello, Ms.Jones! I would like to say right off the bat I love to write and I'm good at it, but I also love to read and Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite book. Oh, dear, I hope that isn't to long, Ms.Jones. I also read Castle in the Air- I didn't like as much because, as my two other friends and I put it, you ran into writers block when you were nearly finished- please make a third book!

From Ayan

  • Get well soon Diana.. Anyone out there with Archer's goon on video? I can cap them..which means conbert them to CD, and then send multiple copies around for ppl to watch on their computers. I'm a member of the filesharing program IRC on the internet, and we strictly believe in sharing stuff through downloads, uploads and sends..NO TRADING. So I'm not profit-making in my motives.. I WANTS TO WATCH ARCHER'S GOON!! *quiet, smeagol!* Bye and good luck again Diana!! ;)

From Debbie

  • I first read Dogsbody in my early teens and loved it. Unfortunately as the years went by I couldn't remember the name of the book but always remembered what the book was about and the names of the people in the story. I am now 38 and was recently at my local library helping my 11 yr old daughter with books and saw your book. I was so excited. I checked it out and have reread it in 2 days. I enjoyed it as much the second time as I did the first. I am now going to start reading your other books even though they are for teens. With 3 young kids of my own, the books are easy and quick reading for me. I know I will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed Dogsbody( a name I will not soon forget). Thanks again.

From Hana

  • I really love your books!!!! They're soooooooooooooooooooooooo great! Your're one of my favorite writers of all time! I think I've read almost all of your books. I'm inspired by your writing. I love to write books myself(the ideas just pop into my head!) and have a few(like five)going right now! I think it would be cool to see a sequel to one of you books(Chrestomanci and Year of the Griffin and so on) but there's definitly no rush! They're all ready so good! Right now, for a thing at school, my friend Lily(who loves your books too) and I are reading "Charmed Life" and "The Lives of Christopher Chant"!I havn't read those two in a little while so it's really fun to read them again! I have the four of the Chrestomanci books in the "Volumes"(The Chronicles of Crestomanci Volume 1 and The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Volume 2) which have two of the four in each one! Charmed Life was the first of your books I read! I think it was a great start because it was so good so I wanted more of your books! My favorite bookstore is Bookshop Santa Cruz which has basically all of your books!I'm kinda picky about which books I read so it's really great that I have your books to read. When I grow up I think I'm going to be a book illustrator(and, if I have any books I've written, I would illustrate my own!). I love all the books that you wrote that I've read. I've also read "Firebirds", which is really good. I loved "Little Dot"! It's such a great story and I love cats(actually they're my favorite animal) so that also makes it great!

From emily

  • Hi! I already wrote to one of my other favorite authors, Jane Yolen, and got a short diapproving letter back after all the nice things I've said about her work. I hope I might get some nicer reply back from you because you are my most favorite author. I love the novels Dark Lord of Derkholm and the sequl Year of the Griffen. I was wondering, and you don't have to reply because I know you are busy, but is there going to be another sequl to the Year of the Griffen? I read those two books five times each and I still can't get enough! My favorite character I think is Kit and also the dragon Mr. Scales. I happen to be a dragon fane so I am going to have to praise Scales more than Kit. Ha Ha! Silly huh? Anyway, if it is possible, do you think anyone will make a movie of Dark Lord of Derkholm? That would be so cool! Though the movies never match the book. If so I hope I here from the master herself very soon. I know you must here this everyday but I am your biggest fane. In fact it was your books that got me hooked on reading. If you won't to know, I live in America, Austin, Tx.

From Heather

  • Dear DWJ, I LOVED Dark Lord Of Derholm and Year of the Griffin! I am so happy to hear that you will be writting a third book! Elda is the best. I really hope that she and Flury hit it off. They seem like they could make a great pair, if of course Elda stops hating him! You what else would be cool, Dark Lord of Derkholm the movie!!!! Like it could have real people and the griffins and drangons and suce could like be macanical or somthing like that! But please put the book first! Pleasssssse write the third book! Its been driving me nuts! Get better real soon.

From Jaxom

  • Well I'll try not to pharse this as a question (but in parenthises it would be okay ;-) are you going to make another Derkholm book? It seemed like you were by the way you ended "Year of the Griffin"), will you please please please make another Derkholm book, I am just dying to find out what will happen next! - Thanks

From Adam

  • I was wandering if you were going to make a book in between dark lord of derkholm and year of the griffin something like what happend at the war and how they met flury and stuff.

From Vanessa

  • Are you going to write any more Chrestomanci books? I love them! I really hope you do!

From James

  • I think that you should write some more books based in the Dalemark world. Write a book about after the crown of dalemark or when Mitt (amil the great) was king etc. The dalemark quartet was a great series and i think you should continue it!

From A.J

  • Ms. Jones, A friend introduced me to your books and i love them. They are very creative! I can't imagine how you come up with your ideas. I was particularly enthralled with a Tale of Time City, which I finished yesterday. My friend and I would both really appreciate it if you did a sequal, or prequel, but especially the former. Even if it was about Sam instead of Jonathon and Vivian, we would LOVE it! Thankyou.

From Alex

From Wynne Jones Hanks

  • Hello Diana, I happened to look up my name today.....maiden name..........and came across your books!! How wonderful! How did you come by your name? What is your family background. My grandmothers name was Winifred, my mother's: Carol Wynne; thus I ended up with the Wynne. I love my name. I came across the meaning a few years ago.......Celtic, meaning light a fair of skin. My Grandmother was a Scholding and has an English backgound. I come from America, but live in Vienna, Austria at this time. My husband works for the International Atomic Energy Agency. Please tell me, in what order do I purchase a trilogy or so forth of your books?

From Alycia

  • I absolutely loved Year of the Griffin, I've read it 16 times! is there going to be a sequel to it? I want to find out what happens with flurry and elda ^_^

From Ben

  • I loved the book "witch week" unfortunatly I felt awful at the end. This si because I believe in magic as exploring the full potential of the human mind. But in this book it is abolished for ever I know you cant change it but this is just to let you know what I think. You are my role model and your books transport me to another world.

From bLorna

  • Why don't you write the rest of Wild Robert? It reads like a first chapter.

From Rachel

  • Hello there. I am thirty six years of age. I have been a fan of yours since the seventies when i first read Wilkin's Tooth. Your books made a huge impression on me, and shaped my imaginative life as a child and teenager. As an adult I often recall ideas from your books, and long for the magic, humour and companionship they hold. I loved all of them. Particular favourites were Cart and Cwidder (- I read it over and over), Charmed Life (Of course! And I remember how they butchered it on Jackanory!) The Ogre Downstairs and Eight Days of Luke. The only one I couldn't get on with was Drowned Amnet - no idea why. I am so glad to find this site. I have frequently thought over the years that i would love to meet you or at least let you know how much I have appreciated, enjoyed and been inspired by your work. It seems that you have been let down by publishers from time to time. I believe that all your books should be in print! I'm sure you have better things to do, but if possible i would love an acknowledgment that you have seen this, otherwise i will try to send a letter to your publisher. I want you to know how much you shaped my life. I only wish i had an imagination to rival yours.

From Daniella

  • Hello, I just want you to know that 'The Chronicles of Chrestomanci' are the best books I've ever read. My favorite is 'The Lives of Christopher Chant'. I just finished the whole series today. I am so dissapointed that my reading will be over, so I will just have to read another one of your series. You are a very amazing author.

From Catherine

  • I absoulutly love Your books! This might seem kinda rude and seem kinda well pushy, but I'm 12-years-old, and I love to act, and I was wondering if you were going to allow one of your books that has a 10-14 year old girl in it! Please Please tell me! P.S. Your books are some of the greates ever!

From J. Lindsay

  • Ms. Jones, I would just like to say how much I admire you, and your work. I'm in highschool, a writer at heart, and adore fantasy and science fiction. I want to become an author...rather, it's that passion that I seem to have no choice but to try to follow and hope not to live in a cardboard box after college. Anyway...I don't remember which book of yours I read first. All I know is it was many years ago. I was hooked... so I read another...and another...I'm still reading them today. My god! Your plots are just genius. They are quick reads now...as opposed to when I was younger. Even so, I can still get a lot out of your writing. They are comforting too, during the stress of school and everything that goes with teenage years. You are an idol for me, and I hope that someday I can achieve half of what it is you manage to do.

From LIsa

  • Hi, I just wanted to say that your many fantasy worlds which take us from the normal everyday use of magic into worlds that have unlimited uses. I love all of your books. i am an adult and find that there are not enough fantasy writers for adults. It has been rumored that your Howl's castle series would be made into a movie. I really hope this is true because I think it would make an excellent movie. Thank-you

From Nick

  • I just finished reading volume 2 of the chronicals of chrestomanci. I absolutely loved the two books. I do wish that you would write more though. I started reading your books as i had finished the 5th harry potter book. Now i am at the point where im going to have to once again find another series of books to start reading. It would be really nice if you could write a volume 3 to the chronicals of chrestomanci. thanks

From Lindsay

  • Hi. I love your books. you are my favourite author ever! i write my own stories too. i especially like Witch Week and Arthurs Goon- very funny. you are lucky to be able to get all these good ideas and to be able to write so well. im eleven and in Year six. i love your books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Sarah

  • I read your book, the Dalemark Quartet. It was such an entertaining and interesting book to read. I could hardly put the book down because I was just dying to find out what was going to happen. I also love the way you write your stories it is so clever. I am hoping to read another one of your books as soon as I can but for now my "new" books are piling up!! I know at the top of the screen it says not to ask you if your going to write another book for the series,"there are already lots and lots and lots of messages asking Diana to write another Chrestomanci/Howl/Dark Lord/Dalemark book ... You don't need to say that yourself!" But I have to say this. I have read many fantasy books and the Dalemark Quartet series of books are one of my most favorite books,(I recommend them to all my friends). So ya I must say it, please write another book to end the series!!I am dying to find out what will happen to Maewen and Mitt!! By the way your characters are awesome!!! Thanks for writing the books I loved reading them!! P.S. I read everyone elses notes and they all say your the best author, I believe it too! KEEP WRITING AND I'LL KEEP READING!!!!

From Laura

From Iris

  • Hi Mrs. Jones, I recently discovered one of your books in the Children«s library. Now I cannot stop reading all of them that I could get a grip on. And let me tell you, I am now 36 years old. Thank you. Iris

From Caitlin

  • My name is Caitlin and I am fourteen years old. I'd just like to say how much I enjoy reading your books! My absolute favourite so far would have to be Hexwood. The descriptions in it were superb and I especially loved all the parts about the wood. I also immensely enjoyed The Merlin Conspiracy, Witch Week, The Time of the Ghost, Black Maria, Fire and Hemlock and The Magicians of Caprona. The reason I love your books so much is because I can feel as though I am actually in them, experiencing everything that the characters think and feel. I can almost get lost in the fantasy worlds they visit too. I recently read The Merlin Conspiracy and I LOVED it! From start to finish, it was a flurry of amazing people, places, animals and, of course, magic. My favourite characters were Roddy, Mini and, simply because they added so much humour to the book, Isadora and Ilsabil. I loved how you interwove Stonehenge and Gwyn ap Nudd into the plot. I also loved all the descriptions, especially of the Inner Garden and the manse in Wales. I would really like to travel there one day. Thank you very much for writing The Merlin Conspiracy. It has inspired me to write a story of my own! :)

From Woody

  • I love your books very much. I was very interested the way you write your books. I did not really read all of your books, but every single one I read was very good. I always wished I could write a book like yours. I love reading books very much and could read two thick books a day. I always fiction story than real stories. I like the way you always confused the reader at the start.Like the dogsbody, you made me confused at first to think what the luminous was and who really was the one who killed the young luminous. Then the hexwood farm. It was more complicated than other kind of your books I ever read. Nearly all of your books I ever read, the hero or heroin had lost their memory, like in he hexwood farm. I admire the way you made the magics in chrestomanci. You made it as if the magic was like ropes and tangled ribbons. There is much more I would like to add but I could not arrange it in words.

From Sarah

  • hello! I was so excited to find this site! I am 27 years old and read Howl's moving castle as a young girl. It is my favorite book ever...even now! I still read it about twice a year - but no I'm not a complete nutter I just really love the story and when I read it, it reminds me of how much I love good fiction. I never thought of looking for other work by you, but recently my boyfriend found other books by you and now I'm working my way through the whole lot - so far my favorite is Deep Secret. I work in the Education Department of a theatre and people often comment on how the plays I make with the children and young people (aged 5-65!) are so magically influenced and I put this down to being so influenced by Howl as a young girl. Thank you so much for your inspiration - I look forward to reading many more exciting stories to come. Love sarah P.s. My Pc name is even Howl MC which makes the people at aol laugh when I have to call up!!!!

From Katie

  • Please, if you ever make a movie out of one of your fantastic books, will you post it on this website so that normal teens, like myself, have a chance to audition for a part in a book they love? You're my favorite author and I love your books!

From Rosie

  • To Diana, I have recently read one of your titles 'The Merlin Conspriacy' I enjoyed every page of it, the best thing I've read since Robin Jarvis's 'Tales of the Wyrd Museum'. I got extremly attached to the characters in particualar Grundo as he reminded me a lot of myself. I'd love to see a follow up to the book! Thank you for reading this message Love Rosie 13 years old.

From Cara

  • Hi, I'm really not sure if I want to see the Howl film. I'm worried I won't be able to remember what I imagined. I love your books- you have no bigger fan! Please write another Howl book ( just about Sophie and Howl not Abdullah or anyone else)?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep writing for me please!!!!

From Heather

  • Wow!!! I loved DARK LORD OF DERKHOLM and YEAR OF THE GRIFFIN. I hope that the third book is about Elda agian. Elda is my fav. I hope she and Flury hit it off. I CAN'T WAIT for the next book! Please email me back, I would like to know when or if its coming out. Keep writing, you're GREAT at it! I think Howl's Moving Castle will make a great movie! I also think that Dark Lord of Derkholm will someday make an even greater one. In the next book in the Dark Lord/Year of the Griffin, I think it would be neat if Elda and Flury hooked up,as I said before. Elda is so cool, if I was a griffin I would like to be just like her. Kit is pretty neat too. I would like to know more about Flury.

From Laura

  • Why dont you write more books about Chrestomanci. I think it would be cool if you wrote about when Cat (Eric Chant) was Chrestomaci and who he found as his succesor. Or about the previous Chrestomancis before Christopher Chant. I sure hope you do because I am running out books to read. And the Chrestomanci ones are my FAVORITE!!

From Katy

  • Just wanted to say that while I love all your Chrestomanci books 'Year of the Griffin' is great. I'd love to hear more about how Blade and Claudia(?) and Elda and THe foreign Griffin - i've forgotten his name..its on the tip of my tongue - go as at the end they had stuff starting to happen. sorry im not more specific - i don't have a copy on me at the moment

From ellendale

  • hi diana. silly as this may sound I read your books to lay to rest claims that I was comitting playerisim, and got hooked on them. i always wanted to be a writer but my problem with dislexica makes it really difficult to relay what's in my head to my hand and it becomes frustrateing. I don't know how you can do it so well. I only write to amuse my little cousins, something i regret each time i babysit them for they nag me relentlessly to hurry up and write another while giving me hints on what my characters should do next. i can only keep them quite by threatening to kill off their favourites. a helpful aid in my writting is my muse who has just graced me with her presence and as i am writting her golden eyes are watching my fingers move across the keyboard, probably wondering why they are not opening a can of cat food. so although i could probably have typed glady all day i most go! good luck with your next book...

  • Hi, I'm a middle school librarian in the US. I am a huge fan of your work. I was wondering if there were any plans for more books with the Derkholm characters. They are my favorites, along with Fire and Hemlock and the Dalemark Quartet. I'm really looking forward to your next book.

From Sian

  • I'm doing research into my father's family in Wales, who are oddly enough Wynne-Jones' in North Wales. I was wondering which part of Wales it is that your family is from, if there might be a connection. And if there is, then it might explain my inability to live without words.....:> Thank you ever so much..... Sian..... PS, Would you ever consider coming to the States for a convention?

From Jan

  • I'm a high school librarian who loves your books. I would love to see one or more downloadable screensavers that would help me to "advertise" your books in my library. I've had a great student response for other authors' screensavers and they are a great way to entice students into your books.

  • Hmm! I've been in a 'rediscover Diana' mood of late and have pretty much reread everything I own. Id just like to say how much The Tough Guide To Fantasy Land makes me laugh, Id never consider it a childrens book (Though If any of your books are, I am, surprisingly ,still very much a child at heart). There is a certain loving mockery to the whole book that would take years of reading fantasy to appreciate, and I love every minute of it. A real joy, I reccomend it to every hardcore fantasy fan I know. Now If only I could get them to buy it rather than just borrow mine ;)

From Naomi

  • I would just like to say that you are my favorite author of anyone, and how do you come up with such amazing ideas? I always feel ecstatic yet on the verge of tears after I finish reading one of your books; I feel so sad that I have to put it down and go back to normal life! I also have crushes on several of the main characters! Currently I have a shrine for Mitt (Dalemark Quartet) in my bedroom, as I have had for Howl, Blade, etc... Are these characters based on real people? Is there any chance at all I could meet them? Well, I look forward to reading more!

From Christabel

  • Dear Diana I absolutely LOVED your books.I have no idea which I liked best, as they are all fantastic. I am not going to say that I am your number one fan, probabley every other person says that, but I do think your books are the best in the universe.PLEASE can you write some more books as I have read almost all of them except for Wilkins Tooth and about two others. Really hoping you'll write more books soon, Christabel ,from Glasgow

  • I just love your books espesaly the Darklord Of Derkholm and The Year of the Griffen. My Q. is if there will be another of the series comming sortly.

From marlyne

  • dear Diana, first, I hope you will get better soon! I bet it is hard for you to lay there without writing. :'( well, I am Marlyne, I hope there aren't too many erors in my letter, because I am Dutch. I started to t=read your books e few years a go. first the chrestomanci books, (now I am reading the last one) and I bought all the Dale mark books. ( they have to be translated firts, but I was thinking to buy the english copy's of witch aren't brought out yet, because so many books of you are not translated yet) I noticed that the Dale mark books are inspired on.....( I really had to think loung and hard) the netherlands and belgium. in part two of these four books, the boy lives in a land with windmills, ditches and a lot of green fields and farmers. I have great respect for you, because you made of two coutry's a new world, with romantic islands and magical persons. I hardly can believe that someone can make this up! also, in another part , the men in your book often have ( I will try to explain this but you havan't got the word that we use for it in dutch) noses that are similair to the noses from the men in belgium. the only tihng I miss in youre books are the landmaps! because of the many places you recall in youre dale mark books, even I could make easily a map ( I draw a lot had finals in them) or do you have a special reason for this? I really would like to know! :) what do you think of other writers? especially J.R.R Tolkien and J.K Rowling. I have read from both some books and I saw the movies. I was really inpressed by the books from J.R.R Tolkien. and I would like to know: would you want to turn one of youre books into a movie??? ( I would go!!! :D:D:D ) do you travel to get inspiration for your books??? or do you meet people and go to the library to get information? because at the moment, I am writing a novel. I have also an idea for a fantasy book(s), but I figured that the best thing to do was start with an easy one. I get a lot of my ideas from just walking down the street and notice things, like some people that play drums. or things on vacation;like a small town that looks like a fairy tale, or deep cave'a that are kind of spooky. I know now, that it takes o lot of time before you have all the information you need. and you have to make things up, like were they live and how they act against themselves and each other. I already know a lot about writing, but do you have any tips for me left??? a lot of making better hugs :D and greets from my small and cold land :P Marlyne P.s if you aren't to busy after you got out of hospital, maby we couls mail more often!

  • I just wanted to say that I've just finished reading your 4-in-1 Dalemark Quartet books, and I loved them! I didn't want the story to end, I'm a bit of a romantic and really appreciated the bit about Mitt and Maewan. I look forward to reading more of your books, :o)

From J-Margaret

  • I read "Black Maria" yesterday."Aunt Maria"is very similer to my grand mather. My mather and her sisters(they are children of my grand mather) are hate her.(I call her M(mean monster!)hear.) But, you know,M is very good at manipulate people with a guilty feeling. And my mother have no brothers and is a eldest sister. So M lives with her. My mother hate her even now.(She is near to 60.) Nowadays, she feels about for the way to get free from this feeling. I want to introduce this book to my mother to know there are so many M and so many persons who feel like herself. By the way, I like your books. I didn`t know till I read over 10 books.(I read your books at the library.) I wait for your new books with full of expection.

  • Hi! I am nearly thirteen years old and I absolutely love fantasy books! Unfortunately, I've only read a few of your books but I need to read more of them! They're awesome! You have a very unique style and incorperate a little humour throughout the story. Kids need that. Right now I'm reading Howl's Moving Castle and I love it so much I want to stay at the castle myself and talk to Calcifer (so far he does not seem evil, but I've only read the first six chapters so that could change at any moment.) I think it is so cool that you wrote that book based on the idea that boy gave you. I LOVE writing with a passion; I think it is the most exciting thing especially when you don't have your story fully planned out because then you don't know what's going to happen! I consider myself to be fairly good at writing, however I find it difficult to end my stories. Anyway, even though I am enjoying Howl, I'm a little confused about something. Why was the witch mad at Sophie in the first place? I found that part unclear. I know you are busy and if you can't do this, I'll understand, but could you please explain this somehow via this site? My parents don't like me giving our e-mail address to stuff. Thanks!

From katie

  • Hello Diana, i would just like to say that i absolutely love your books. i understand that you get requests everyday to write another book in one of your series haha, but i really do hope that you'll write a book that furthers the adventures in "the merlin conspiracy." we NEED to kno what happens!!! i hope that your sugery went well, and i hope that you are feeling better. keep up with your amazing work, you inspire people around the world...what could possibly be better then that.

  • You know how, in Time City, a character is called Vivian Smith? There is an Australian poet named Vivian SMith who was born in 1933. Thought it was an interesting coincidence.

From Jennel

  • Hey! Just saying "Hi" from Hawaii to one of my favorite authors in the whole world! I really love your books! I've only read two of them (Howl's Moving Castle and Deep Secret), but I'm planning to read more! Just those two alone convinced me you are an extremely talented fantasy writer. Both of your books are so funny! You have very colorful characters as well. I don't know what else to put in this fanmail and I'm not very good at composing them either, so the last thing I want to say is thank you for writing such wonderful stories and I hope you continue to write many more books to come. Stay healthy and aloha! Jennel

  • I love your books, especially the Chronicals of Chrestomanci Volume 1. I hope that one of your other books tells more about ERic Chant's life as chrestomanci and mabye one even tells more of how Christopher Chant grew up with Millie and then Wed. Today, I am starting on another one of your amazing books! Thanx for your books!

From Cara

  • Dear Ms. Jones, Please, please write another Dalemark book!!!!!!!!! Please!!! I know it's kinda of funny, but you write so well I now have the biggest crush on Mitt. I mean, seriously, when we play Truth or Dare and people ask me who do you have a crush on and I say he's someone out of a book, people laugh. But I have to know what happens with Mitt and Maewen!!!!!!!!! Plus also, making Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Air into a trilogy wouldn't be a bad idea. Ilove to write and your books give me good ideas. Thank you ever so much for the gift of your books!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best Wishes in All You Do, Carolina, Age 12

From Maeri

  • Dear Diana Wynne jones, my question to you, is there going to be a film made out of any of your books? And also will there be, perhaps, in the future a follow up to The Merlin Conspracy?

From Lexi

  • I first heard about you from my friend who lives in Austria. She adored your writing style and ideas that you came up with. I had never really thought of giving fantasy books a try, until that point. I had always seen fantasy movies, and liked them--but sometimes books just seemed a bit too odd. Or at least, that was what I thought. First off, I would like to congratulate you on the adaptation of your book "Howl's Moving Castle" to the big screen by my personal hero, Miyazaki Hayao. Have you seen some of his other work? I think you would like it quite well. Particularly "Spirited Away", "Whispers of the Heart", "Laputa", and "The Cat Returns". All those movies remind me of the emotions I get while reading your books. The reason I decided to give your books a try was because of this very reason÷because I know that Miyazaki would choose only the best to base one of his movies after. My first book of yours that I read was "Howl's Moving Castle" and although I was dubious at first, I fell into your writing style with much fluidity. I love the attention to detail you give and my personal impression is that in all your books everything seems to be bathed in a golden light÷whether through the description or narrative. I'm now working on my second book of yours, The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Part I, and am finding I love this book just as much as Howl's Moving Castle. I love the idea of alternate worlds, and also the antiquity and mystery that these worlds seem to have. Even though going into college this autumn, these books have brightened up my dark days inside the house (hiding from the terrible heat outside) and I hope they will continue to in times to come. Sincerely Lexi

  • Diana, My entire family adores you. It is not unusual for any given family member to talk about your characters as if they were family members at any time. I:E: Don't you think it was an important step in Grundo's emmotional development when Nick took the fall for him? We hope you are well and appreciate your work. It is just amazing that you are so in touch with modern youth. My only scold is about Gwendolyn trying to kill Cat and Jaime. How could you let that poor child wander for a hundred years alone? It utterly broke my heart (not to mention that of his parents.) My only suggestion would be to give us some strong mother/daughter relationships, why are all the men the nurterers? Oh Yeah, I just don't know if things are really going to be able to work out between Roddy & Nick. I love you Babe!!

From Josh

  • Dear Diana, I was really, really impressed at how gripping The Merlin Conspiracy is! In some books, the beggining is really boring. But this pulls you in from the beginning. YouI know a lot of people say this about your books, but I really mean it! You might be thinking, oh eveyone says this just to be polite, but I really truly mean this!

From A. Bush

  • I have read all of your books that i can get my hands on and your writing has inspired me to start a book of my own at 15. i hope to get it published one day but it keeps going in unexpected directions, so who knows. i really enjoy your books and i want to thank you for inspiring me.

  • I love all of yous books! I have around 12 of them and my brother and I always read them! My favourite book is Deep Secret and i find Archer's Goon intresting too. Keep up the good work!

  • I've been a fan since I first read Howl's Moving Castle when I was 10. I followed that up with Charmed Life and totally loved it. This is my second time posting on your website and I really hope you will get well soon. It's not a matter of writing more books -- a wonderful person like you who brought so much joy and excitment to my life deserves better. I sincerely hope you will get better with each person's visit to your website. Take care! ~ Love from Singapore.

From Carrie

  • Hi Diana! I have long been a fan of your books, particularly Howl and his entourage. You have received so many questions about the animated film (which I read about in Wired magazine, Sept. 2004, and they did not even mention your book), but I had a thought/question about it that I wanted to share with you (even though I know I probably won't get an answer). Animated films are great, but has anyone approached you with an offer to do a live-action version of Howl's Moving Castle? I think with the special effects and the computer technology that is out there right now, as well as the talented actors that are in abundance, it would be incredibly rewarding to see an interpretation of that nature, particularly one originating from your home country. In any case, I am excited for the film, and I wanted to thank you for your wonderful worlds that it is so easy and fun to escape to! I hope you are enjoying life!

From Mette Salgaard

  • Dear Mrs. Jones, I am from Denmark and I love your books very much, they are never predictebel and I must say that I read fantasy with a new angel after I read "Though guide to fantasyland". It is brilliant, eventhoug it not is a "real" book. Some of my absolut farvorites are "Dark Lord of Derkholm" and "Year of the Griffin" and I would love you to write a new book about this universe - I specially fancy Ruskin the Dwarf :-). But I guess you hear that alle the time, about all your your books.

From nauta est de force

  • Excuse me Diana but i just loved the Dark Lord of Derkholm.I was so excited at the end to find out about Deucalion, and you you hinted about it so secretly. So i was wondering when their would be a sequel specificly about after Blade and Kit finished their training. P.S-I plan to read many more of your books and thank you for you're attention to my inquiry.

From Alex

  • Hi i love your books. I find them fascinating and always look forward to reading them.
